Supply lines can sometimes be re-routed but the drain lines would be a real challenge.

Its a 4 story townhouse. The kitchen is actually on the 2nd floor, and the drain lines runs down to the ground floor and underneath the concrete foundation

I think you have about zero chance of moving that plumbing.

If you’re willing to gut the whole thing to the studs, remove all the interior walls, and do a 500K virtual new build out floor plan that moves all of the bathrooms above to line up with the new plumbing stack location, then sure, you can remove that wall and relocate that stack. You’ll probably need to redo the stairs though, and that might add another 100k-150K for a 4 level.

It can be done. It is impossible for us to comment on the cost of doing this as there are too many unknown variables (so ignore the estimates). That is a lot of waste stacks in one wall and there is no way that was that was the best way to plumb a single family home.

If the wall is load bearing, get the plumber's plan and get it to an engineer. If it is not load bearing then it will be much easier and likely cheaper to do.

Can it be done at anything like a reasonable cost? Probably not.

Even if that's not a load bearing wall you will be into significant construction on the floor below and even more so on the floor above. Depending on how the floor joists are oriented you are also looking at bulkheads, etc.

Having had the significant pleasure of plumbing several 3 story, townhouses one summer, I submit it is difficult to make a guess on this. For all we know that wall is running parallel to the joists and sitting over a garage/utility space . So this could be a massive problem or nothing big at all.

The townhouses we did were ground floor utility room, garage and storage. This was over the living area, with the sleeping area above that. Because the townhouses were rather narrow and long, the load bearing walls were the common walls and the plumbing wall was parallel to the joists. Moving the plumbing in those townhouses would be easy, as you could just run them in the joist cavity towards the common wall. You would have to put some type of pipe chase in but that could be as little as 6" deep. Since it was over a utility room the work below would be no big deal.

I will try to provide clarifications and answer responses to all the comments in this one response.

The house is on a concrete foundation with no crawl space or basement. The wall is not load bearing, and the floor truss joists run parallel to the wall similar to what bry911 said. The pipes run to the ground floor half-bathroom which has the garage on the other side of the wall. This half-bath will get a shower addition to it as part of this renovation.

Also, after many discussions, we decided we do not want to knock the entire wall down, but would like to have a cutout in the middle with roughly 27" of wall on either side of the cut out. This will allow us retain sufficient upper cabinet space and reduce the total amount of work (or so we think).

Would it work if the plumber used 45 offset on the 4" cast iron to move it in a little, and 90s for the rest of the pipes so it would fit in the 27" of wall?

With the caveat that I haven't seen the property, it doesn't sound all that difficult. The fact that one plumber said it couldn't be done gives me pause as this should be an easy ask and so there may be something that I can't see.

I really don't understand why you have all those drain lines, there is no way a single family residence needs that many drain stacks. A 4" drain is going to have 160 DFU (drain fixture units) and a full bath is 6 DFU's (8 with a separate tub). I just don't understand why you have two 4" stacks in the same wall.

I look at that wall and some of the comments ("$500K virtual new build?" Really?) and go "Pffft, I could deal with that." Practically every project we do involves taking out walls - load-bearing more often than not - that contain any combination of stacks, drains, vents, supplies, radiator pipes, heating ducts, wiring, whatever. Between me and my trade subs we always figure it out. Yes, this wall has a lot of plumbing. Yes, it badly laid out. But we're not talking the frickin Manhattan Project here. Of course the plumbing can be moved to a stub wall in the corner. This is exactly what we usually do in these situations.
