Windows Design Dilemma

very challenging window covering

Hello all,
I have a very challenging window covering and am looking for creative suggestions. Here are pictures of the bay window in my daughter’s bedroom.
We have considered roller shades or Roman shades but they are very expensive to have custom cut for those odd windows and/or have found many companies cannot do it. We had considered outside mount but don’t like the look.
We feel a full drapery would close that space in too much as the ceiling is not very high there but are ok with small side panels.
I should also mention we also have 2 cats who are usually well behaved, but we would like to be careful when using sheers and certain drapes, just in case. (Sheers within the windows would probably work but leaving them down to the ground would not with the cats.)

Do you have a budget range in mind? Is the purpose of new coverings privacy, room darkening, decoration, or some combination?

Ikea carries lightly patterned lace curtains that can be used in daytime. Cat claw marks don't show much. Combine with an opaque fabric curtain on Ikea curtain rods. You can shorten them easily to end up at the longest apron length or just touch the sills.

Growing up my bedroom had an alcove window. I had a drape rods that opened against the walls like opening a double door. I don't even know if they make them anymore and the cost.

You could buy roller shades at Home Depot or Lowes cut to fit the inside of the windows. They are reasonable. Hang the roller on the angled windows. Remove the rod in the bottom of the shade. Cut the bottom of the shade to the angle of the window, create a fold the same size of the original fold and glue. Then place the rod back in the new fold. You might have to glue the one end closed so the rod doesn't slip out.

Hi Scott and Ianna - thanks for your replies. Scott, I practically LIVE on the Grow Native website and have utelized the conservation dept. info at every turn for the last three years. smile. They are really incredible - so lucky!! I am definitely going to use the MO primrose and pussytoes (which I have growing in my prairie field); I already have the rudbekias and echinaceas going in the perennial herb/flower bed on the periphery of this location as well as wild lavender hyssop and some other natives such as tickseed coreopsis and fire pink (catchfly). I'd love to get my hands on some liatris but I think they're difficult from seed and my budjet is busted already! smile. As for the thyme, I've decided against it for a few reasons - mostly the bees (although I'm pretty sure wooly thyme would grow at this site because my creeping thyme near the same area grows gangbusters - and - my drainage here is too darn good). I've settled on arranging some large rocks naturally around my oaks, filling the niches with soil and planting tough but showy specimen plants such as epimediums, hellbores, coreopsis, heuchera and others that look natural and somewhat casual and filling the pathways with something like buffalo grass (not sure on that, might end up being river gravel). Does anyone know if you can grow epimediums from seed???

Thanks for all your comments and nice words! The paint is called Wise Owl from Kelley Moore, a regional paint company. I think it's available here in Washington, in California, Texas and a couple other states. LOL natal. Yes, that's a window lock. All six windows are functioning, opening windows which is kind of silly. The one that is closest to the "bridge" can be opened but the others would require a ladder and a lot of bravery. I know the builder's guys enjoyed having them open during construction so they could have some cross ventilation but we won't be opening them any time soon. While I love the idea of spraying the windows, we definitely will not climb ladders as we both have a fear of heights. (Guess you missed the thread about our 17' high smoke detector when the batteries ran low. DH wanted to shoot it--and he's very anti-gun.) Needless to say we don't have a 30' extension ladder but it's a great suggestion for normal people. Squirrelheaven, I'll have to think about that idea some more. If the sheers won't cut down on light they might work. And they'll look nice from the outside too. As for the cost of the remote control thingy, I think if he wants it badly enough, he won't care how much it costs. We differ a lot on that point.

@mimimomy Height from the floor to the lowest point of the arch of the outer side of the windows? I would guess about 7-7.5 ft as the overall ceiling is 10 ft. I can measure when home. Do you need full coverage for privacy? Not really but would prefer to be able to have the option for a darker room, and the option to wander around in underpants as needed. We don't have any 2-story neighbors behind us, and there's a wood fence between our lots. I can't picture how any sort of half-covering would look..... What style would you like to go for? Looking to head toward a more contemporary look? More traditional? This is our family room (e.g., casual living room; we have a separate formal living room). I generally prefer transitional/traditional with some relatively contemporary art/decor.

I don't think a sectional will work in your room, because the corner of the sectional will stick out into the pinch point area. And nobody really sits in the corner. I think the pinch point area should be left open to enter the conversation area. You will be better with 2 sofas, or with sofas and chairs. Consider removing some of the end tables and using coffee tables instead, or an ottoman with a tray for drinks. End tables take space that you could use for more seating. Not sure how many people you need to seat comfortably. I like ottomans. They are just as comfortable as a lounge section for stretching out, but have more flexibility when you need to seat extra people. And you can use them at different sitting places. I'd use one at the end seat nearest the fireplace.

@functionthenlook - thanks for the tip! I live in Canada and have called a couple of custom drapery/blind people who said this was too much of a challenge and that their custom people could not do the work. One of them did price out custom Roman shades but it was going to be $2500 to cover the three windows. That’s way beyond my budget. I didn’t consider just doing it myself the way you described but that really could work! Thank you!
