X, Y and Z daylilies 2022
Comments (15)Coming late to the party again. We just got back from the ADS region 2 Winter Symposium. We had a good time, especially after my job was done. I was the registrar for the event. I think that those of us who are hybridizers need to focus on names that start with X, Y, and Z so that we have more to post in this section. The X might be hard to come up with, but Debra has done her part with Zuzu's Treasure. Beautiful! I must admit none of my pictures are from 2021, but I wanted to post something. Yauhannah Lake performs very well for us. You're Fired is a great grower. Zombie Dust often is inconsistent in pattern, but it's a big flower that is a little diffferent from so many other patterns that seem to have a rather muddy lavender petal color. It was hybridized by a friend in Indianapolis. That's all for me. Nancy...See MoreBest Budded Daylilies of 2022
Comments (15)Sherry - I was looking at this thread again and noticed your comment about daylilies with fewer scapes having more buds. This is something I've really noticed since I've been hybridizing. My seedlings tend to have more buds the first two-three years they bloom. Once they grow into large clumps, the bud counts go down. I think that's a good reason to divide large clumps into smaller divisions. Debra...See MorePurple Daylilies of 2022
Comments (31)Jean Deaver's Dream was very disappointing here (smallish blooms, slow growth and bud count)--just something to consider for anyone from the North yearning for it. Of course, sometimes cultivars do better farther north with snow cover. (Or they might perform in 6B--substantial difference between here and North Carolina or Kentucky.) Moonlight Sail also tenderish weak here, but it's still out there. Silver Sword is nice, but slow to multiply here. Lydia's Regal Robe looked good this year, though bud count still modest. Free the Captives has purplish tones early in the morning, moves to reddish tones, and gradually becomes lighter. Vigorous and tall. The X Files is striking, but plant habit is a bit sprawling. Ashwood Dark Side may fit better as a deep red. Lost in Translation is quite short but a vibrant color. Definitely front row. Sultry Girls looked good this year....See MoreOrange Daylilies of 2022
Comments (30)Santorini Sunset looks like a bright one. Muy Calliente looks very interesting. Oranges are probably the least popular color after yellow on auctions. People don't appreciate how vivid and varied they can be. This is the only pic I took of Bob Marley this year. It did not like the heat against that off-white wall. Spirit Fox looked good, though other oranges can be more vivid. Carrick Wildon is always a later bright one. Alabama Jubilee had a great year. So many oldies showed why they are classics. Krakatoa Lava Stop the Car--not a sizable clump yet, but certainly warrants a pause in one's gaze. Tahiti Sweetie --commands attention with height Mardi Gras Indian --very vivid Tropical Fruit Loops --I like this color. A sib of Mardi Gras Indian Heavenly Dragon Fire --a unique glowing color. Crintonic Fireball --excellent color. Too new to evaluate habit Indian Ripple --great display this year Holiday Party --showy in garden if you like doubles Lana Ishee --the older evergreen that Chris liked (and must have given me). It blooms reliably in a searing color Vitamin C --a good landscaper. The color itself is a bit dull close-up, but makes a bright spot. I have grown to like it. Made a long display. It looks best in sun, which we had a lot of last summer. Solar Fire --an older Webster, very large, plain but showy Heman Mean Green Tropical Fusion --very showy in the garden, even if the plant habit is not ideal. Nan showed this one for a few years....See Moreperen.all Zone 5a Ontario Canada
