Tell me is Safe to Lop a Budded Stem

-It's me asking the same 'ole question. The response has been that a single bud where all those canes are coming from. Still can't wrap my head around the science so I'm asking again as this time I do have loppers in hand and am prepared to take the Plunge-

Coming up on Year 4 of plantings.

Just a handful have new canes. I can tell , as it' nice and green from soil if not a few inches away from the -previous canes-.

All other canes are now looking a bit thick, some may have a largish 1 1/2" thick cane with a Y branching cane forming the framework. These are existing stems that came -from my budded grafts-

I need some voice of re-assurement. There are some I want to LOP cut flush to the soil. Partially to open things up, but also in -theory- to promote new canes from coming up,

Am I safe to do it. Any chance I might have a hole in my framework that won't get replace. I'm okay if a new strong stem doesn't come up this year. As long as something will come up is all I ask

Will that also happen if not in soil /wet moist medium.

Still can't wrap my head around single graft and them - multiples emanating right off it it.

Got 2 new standards coming in - aka, the Graft is 3 feet up.

I have other flowering tree shrubs in my yards (limelight hyd. standards). One late summer noreaster 'hurricane event, blooms were heavy (topheavy) - the entire damm thing uprooted and toppled over. One large main branch/framework broke off. It never -grew-new stems out of the 2 inch stub that remained, but with some more -Y- branching from existing stems, it still filled in nicely.

I haven't grown caladiums, but I am growing elephant ears (colocasia) and alocasia, which are close relatives. I grow them in large wooden tubs in the summer. They are in an area that is fairly shady most of the day. I have found that they want much more water than any of the many other plants I've grown in decades. I have to water every other day even though the surface of the soil is still moist. Otherwise they wilt dramatically. I added extra peat and composted manure to my standard 5-1-1 this year, and the plants are thriving. I think your caladiums need more water, not less. They may also need larger pots. I can see roots near the surface of the soil in my 20-gallon pot on a plant that was nothing but a tuber two months ago.

Hello I have been in battle for about three years, your hibiscus has Thrips and could possibly have Hibiscus gall midge. I have 20ft x 15ft hibiscus (tree). I have been dealing with this for several years. The gall midge is easy to tell put your fallen buds in a ziplock bag and look at bag after 12 to 24 hrs you will see tiny yellow worms. I find the larve like to go to the top of the bag where the zipper is. Thrips are usually the reason for cut looking buds. I personally never had a cut worm attack my hibiscus they like other stuff in my yard better. Spraying the tree will work for the Thrips Bayer 3 in 1 is good but unfortunately the Gall Midge is way more difficult. The adult midge is a tiny fly they lay eggs on in the new buds the egss hatch and the larve eat the inside of the bud, when the bud falls to the ground the larve immerge from the bud into soil where they remain until they are adult midges and fly, then the entire cycle starts all over. Treating your hibiscus with a systemic is the best way to rid your hibiscus, but fallen buds MUST be picked up. I go shake my hibiscus several times a day trying to get the buds before they fall off on their own. Those worms in the picture are gall midge larva. The midge larve is capable of jumping several feet. I just recently had my hibiscus trimmed of 90% of the buds and I'm currently using a two part control system treating soil and treating the tree with two different insecticides off setting each weekly. I hate pesticides but all my other avenue's of natural control or mild cotrol have failed miserably so this is my last ditch effort. The most common insecticide that is a systemic is Imidacloprid the same stuff my neighbors use for ficus whitefly and I believe that my midges are immune to imidacloprid. I wish you luck and hope you only have Thrips.

I did these again this year and have a few more questions (you'd think by the second time I'd have it right, but no, I just keep coming up with more questions). 1. Why slit the peppers? Is it to make sure the liquid gets to the inside of the peppers? Along the same lines, how do we know we don't have air trapped inside the pepper? 2. Why flatten the peppers? Just so they pack better? 3. Any reason serranos can't be used? I did them tonight and noticed as I slit them that they are much denser than jalapenos, thus my question. 4. Technical question. As I was filling my almost last jar I realized that I had not used a spatula to release air bubbles around the edges of the jar. So I pulled the previously filled ones out, did the spatula thing, rewiped the rims and wiped the seal part of the lid, replaced the lids and processed. I would not normally worry about this but because this recipe has oil, I am slightly concerned that some oil may have got on the lid. As long as it seals can I assume it's okay? (I know, this is a silly question, but this recipe still makes me nervous). Thanks! Ann

Patty you are totally right. It's just old school "grandma did it" type of gardening. I never read any scientific evidence that taking off buds helps produce larger, more fragrant or healthier blooms.... but for me, sometimes doing things old school during gardening brings me closer to my roots, memories of my family, growing up on the ranch, etc. Most of the time I'm very science minding and looking for evidence based reasons... like you Nanadoll and SoFl. Especially when it comes to something like soil or pests. But for something like pinching a bud or taking off a bit of stem/leaves to shape the rose how I want it, I see no harm in doing it the way grandma did it. I like puttering around and grooming a bit in the garden. Especially on bright, sunny days. It's soothing for me. We will see. If the tiny buds I left on Peppermint Parfait make gorgeous blooms... then I have to decide if they're healthy and gorgeous because I pinched the others... or because that's just how it would be no matter what I did. No real way to tell in this case. I will say that in my experience, thinning fruit does make the fruit that is left bigger, tastier and healthier. It still does make sense that the same would be true for roses. But again, I never read any research on it and what do I know? Ah well. My thumbnail would be a little prettier if I didn't go around slicing off little rose babies with it. Honestly, I could probably easily be converted into just letting them all do their thing! I will continue removing almost all buds from the baby bands and half the buds from the grafted roses for now. We will see how long I last!

Rifis -

Posted some new observations in my coming up on Year 4. Post winter pruning. I noticed some shrubs have -new stems- coming from the dirt.

Others, while in full bloom, it's fairly round and bushy...my framework appears to be the 3 original canes that came with the rose @ planting 48 months ago. On those 3 stems, it does have Y branching that is thick and barky that ultimate framework.

Last year and the year prior, it did get alfala feeds but this years goal is to get it to basal break from the graft like in ur Pic.

Any tips of nudging it to grow from the graft. The goal for 2022 is to encourage/gain new stems from the soil line.

Or is the answer, eh , it's up to the rose to decide whether it wants to focus energy uptop or down below.

FWIW, I bit the bullet on 2 shrubs. I lopped off dead center a big 'ole cane to open her the center. Now that there is less energy needed to go to this, here's hoping some basal breaks occur

Did the hold the shake test....I really -get- how the union/stem structure is. On one rose, it's really just *3* main stems. I thought it was 2 on a Y branching, but a closer look and hold/shake the stem, 3 stems were moving.

Going to revisit the old threads to refresh one chooses graft vs own root. For me, it was a no brainer noob decision as that is what seemed to be offered widely available. As I get more into pruning/shaping, seeing how things in framework develop over the years, I for sure would rather have stems coming from dirt up rather than emanating from main canes coming off the union. I have a few that I suspect have own rooted or semi-rooted as the these new younger canes when -shaken- do not appear to be --attached- to anything

I think ultimately -own root- for new canes is King
