Attitude about Custom Mix
Comments (20)If you keep a customer happy, word gets out. Make them mad, that gets out too. :) Simple as that! Regardless of how big or small their needs. My dad owned a Auto repair shop from 1983-2005. I can't tell you how many times someone came in for a small quick fix. Wiper blades and such. Many a time he'd fix it quick and not charge. They'd leave happy and tell a friend who needed major work. He never advertised anywhere, and had more work than he could handle till the day he sold it. The clerk should have helped retiredprof. by offering why he felt the customer should go with a bagged mix and let the customer decide. Simple. Like Al stated.. start asking why. I love to play that game. Espicially if they had a snotty attitude! he he. Jodi~ your so right in the fact that they know nothing about their jobs! Worse yet, they don't care!! Some time back we asked a clerk at HD if they had bird house kits for children to build and paint. The clerk took us to what he thought it was. The item he pointed out was the boards to put in the eves of the house to keep birds out! Scary!! ""There's a lot to be said for quality... versus quantity. If a soil lasts for a few seasons, then it's less expensive in the long run than the soil that requires replacing on a regular basis. I'd like a medium to last for more than a few months, before it decomposes and compacts to the point that it's no longer healthy for plant roots, and they're suffocating in it."" So true Jodi~ Espicially in an are like mine! Our growing season is about 9 or 10 months long for annuals and simple stuff. Bagged mixes just don't hold up~ Not to mention the cost of stuff I have to throw away that didn't make it! This season I showed my mom and a friend how great my plants are doing, using Al's mixes. And next spring the garden centers will have 2 less people buying the bagged mixes. :) What can I say.. were several of the many who are tired of throwing away $$! Comments (93)The airlines don't care about your comfort. Although you think you are purchasing a SEAT, you are not. You are purchasing the transportation from point A to point B. The reason why airlines don't have policies regarding obese people is because obese people have money too. Where will it end? Who will be the next pariah to ban? I have experienced many uncomfortable situations on an airplane that I could have very well complained about. Like the guy next to me picking his boogers and rubbing them on his pants. Like the tall guy in front of me who reclined his seat all the way and picked at the scabs on his bald head the entire time. Like the family with a screaming, kicking child behind me. Like the guy next to me watching porn on his Ipad. Like the lady next to me who's perfume application made me nauseous. Or the person somewhere on the plane with such bad body odor the entire plane stunk. If I purchase a seat, I shouldn't have to be subjected to any of these things that make me uncomfortable, right? But, whether you like it or not, we are all subjected to a social contract. We all have to put up with each others failings and that just so happens to make us uncomfortable on occasion. Of course it's not fair and makes us angry. That's a normal, natural feelings. But let me say again - how about a little compassion? How about a little less disgust for our fellow human beings? On another note, thanks Terriks. Louis CK is my favorite comedian!...See MoreArchitect custom -> Builder Custom -> Semi Custom -> Tract
Comments (58)The question is...does it matter? I think it does, because words matter. We throw around words on this board constantly when we really mean other things, and I too am guilty of this. Custom really doesn't mean custom when used on this board, it means architect. So someone who maybe isn't experienced on this board may see the word "custom" and think they designed their house from the ground up, therefore it is very custom. When most posters really mean the house needs someone with professional design experience and some measure of talent to guide you through the design process or actually design the home. ----------- Also a better understanding of the differentiation can lead to better advice. In the area I was born in (an area that I still own land in), the major tract builder can build a 4,000 square foot house for under $280,000. If you can't differentiate between a tract and production builder, it is hard to understand how that is possible. ----------- Finally, I am not sure this board does a great job these days of helping people build a home. I might be alone in this, but I would prefer a well built, poorly designed home over a poorly built, well designed home. We focus so much on the design process and the freedom you have to make selections that we sometimes miss the real tragedy of production and tract builders, the shortcuts they take in construction in order to deliver those appealing prices. While I agree custom homes are better than semi-custom and semi-custom is better than production, etc., the real quality cutoff for me is control of the how the walls are built rather than where they are built. For me this is the biggest draw for an architect and the thing rarely touched on, but may actually pay dividends far into the future that make architects not only affordable, but profitable for those value conscious consumers. Again, this is just my opinion....See MoreMy awful experience with Home Warranty of America
