Well that's a shame--they probably used regular paint instead of masonry paint. Brick and stone need to "breathe" and you cannot use regular house paint on it or it will peel over time. Unfortunately, now that it's painted, it will likely need to stay painted unless you find someone really good at removing the paint and that will cost a pretty penny.

It's one thing to paint brick, it's another to paint it badly and leave a headache for the next people.

I would remove all shutters and change the door to a lovely navy blue. You also should paint the storm door to match the front door to avoid the white rectangle effect.

There are vinyl-safe colors but normally you cannot paint vinyl a dark color due to potential warping from the heat of the sun--you often void any warranty if you paint vinyl windows or siding a dark color.

Look at the siding underneath the shutters to see if there is a color difference from the exposed siding. If not, feel free to remove the shutters and look into installing wider window casings.

Navy blue and yellow are a classic combination.

I agree that you should embrace the yellow of your siding. It can be lovely! A friend of mine painted her home Hawthorne Yellow (which looks like your color). Her trim was white (just like yours). She had Hale Navy blue shutters. (Although none of your windows need shutters.). And…she had a Navy front door. I had voted for a bright red front door. Think a lipstick red! In any event…I think your home has a lot of potential. You could either repaint the white brick white or try painting it yellow to see if you like the entire house one color. Yellow. (Do a search on yellow homes here on Houzz. Beautiful!)

PS: My friend also had a charming little English style cottage garden in front of her home, surrounded by a custom built picket fence, complete with a gate. Adorable! Your landscaping could help cover the bottom of your home….if that is what “offends” you most!

Brick should not be painted with exterior paint as it will peel. Limewash should be used instead. To get peeling paint off brick it can be lightly blasted with ground up walnut shells.

However, DISTRESSED BRICK is a good look to make a house look a bit vintage.

Black might look nice… Or, pull in some natural color by replacing the shutters with some more updated cedar shutters with black hardware. Think I would remove the shutters from the ground floor on the right, replace the upper ones with the cedar, and perhaps add a black awning to the large window on the left. Black accents to tie it all together (lights, entry set, house numbers).

New garage door when budget allows perhaps?

Double windows don't look right with shutters; they are a vestigial decorative statement from the past which you should eliminate. Try a larger gable vent. Upgrade all your lantern lights with new ones that are 1/3 of the front door's height. Paint the sidelights by the door white and then add color to the door; blue, red, black or dark green look great with yellow and white. Spend the big bucks on landscaping!
