i just got off the phone with lowes orland park.......they are calling me 2morrow afternoon.....i am goona get a 5-6 foot coconut palm, 3 foot of trunk windmill or waggie (depending on price) and a washingtonia with 3-4 feet of trunk. they want to make sure their growers have them in stock and if they do they are going to ship them up here with no shipping charges, and i can just pick them up at the store. i will keep everyone updated.

dbrya1 I did lose one of my needles this winter, but it was more because I planted it in a bad spot. All four of my butia's made it, and my second needle made it. I really like the butia's because they can handle a lot of wind, and it's ridiculously windy here. I'm always on the look out for palms that aren't really cultivated, like the more obscure trachy's and sabal's. I always get clay pots because they dry up faster, and that's really nice in winter when all of the seedlings are inside at room temp (and mold grows rampant). It seems whatever I try in plastic doesn't do as well (or just rots, even though I try not to water until it's really dry). Excitingly enough, all of the cacti are winter hardy, provided I protect them from our moisture. I'll probably cover them with over turned buckets or something this fall/winter to keep they cold rain off of them. Here are some different cacti that I found growing a little ways away from a bike path close to me... Unfortunately I went back recently and found that they've been destroyed by some sort of machine.
