Bathrooms Plumbing Design Dilemma

Remodel Master Bathroom from 2001!

Hi! Need help with master bath remodel. We are open to reconfigure it any way!
Remove jetted tub (it's just too big and takes up so much space) replace with different tub
Add glass shower with 2 Shower heads
Does anyone have a ball park of how much this will cost us?

Labor costs depend on your location and materials cost depends on the brands you choose. I'm replacing a tub, toilet. tile floor & surround, vanity & top & all fixtures. Not moving any plumbing or removing any drywall. Using mostly Kohler products. In Massachusetts it will be about $20,000.

Agreed, the cost will depend on your location, the amount of work you have done (moving plumbing or electrical will be $$$ more), the quality of contractor/workpeople you select, and the level of materials you select.

I'm in North Carolina and in the very rough planning stages of an 8x5 (40 sq ft) bathroom. I'm budgeting $25-30k.

If I was going to go with big box store medium level finishes I'd budget $20k.

The most important aspect is that you find the best, most qualified contractor/workpeople. Just look at Houzz discussion posts to see all of the horror stories that happen when buyers go for the cheap, inexperienced workpeople. Or "experience" in doing everything wrong. You DO NOT want someone building out your shower who doesn't follow proper waterproofing.

uh, you need to keep removing everything around that tub. down to the studs. (you can't reuse those walls) can't tell from the pic but you may have some water leakage/issues. are you doing the new waterproofing and tiling? do you know how to properly waterproof? taking out the wall is a great idea but double check to make there is no support issue w/that wall. before you start picking the pretty stuff, get everything demo'ed and waterproofed. Double vanities are everywhere with sinks/countertops included. are you saving that tub?? spraying it will only buy you a few years before it starts peeling. get a new one while you have everything opened up.

thatsmuchbetter: Although I also suspected that it wasn't reasonably bid, at this point your $1,000 tile job theory isn't holding up. You have an entire agenda to push and you don't care if it matches up with the facts of this case or not. For the most part we have to take the information that we get here at face value. Sure there are a lot of questions about how this job could go so wrong. If the facts are as presented - then a contractor took advantage of a consumer who didn't have a lot of sophistication about managing a job like this. To Elisia Ellis: You need to understand that if things are as you presented them, the cost of the work was probably significantly out of line for what you needed to be done even if it was done right ( I don't have all the details, so I'm hedging here). The work that was done was grossly incompetent at any price. That this could have gone so badly makes me think that you need some trusted help to resolve the problem with the current contractor and repair your bathroom. This should be a family member or trusted friend who can guide you on legal action, as well as helping you to make decisions with correcting the bathroom. It's not really likely for this to happen as you described unless a contractor was taking advantage of a homeowner without the sophistication and experience to manage such a project. You don't need to be shamed or feel ashamed -- but I think recovering your money and repairing your bathroom is going to be more complex than even the original job - and it's not something that you should go at alone. Get some assistance from someone who can help you to think through this (again, a family member or trusted friend who has business skills -- not a paid person). You will probably need legal assistance and such, but before you go there, you will probably need a trusted advocate who can commit to helping you sort through this.

I’m not understanding all of your layout. Do you have a plan of the whole floor? But if you can close off that door past the washer and dryer, add a sink there and toilet in front of the other closet (obviously change the door), it would be similar to but even bigger than my powder room/laundry closet, which works great.

I need to see the to scale floor plan of that space and the bedroom . I ahte toilet rooms and for sure even more when combined with the shower . I would bet that none of those walls are load bearing but yes you need to have that checked. But in the meantime a floor plan please

Bathroom shown is quite compact, what you have now is about the best to be expected (in the space you have) unless you are willing to; eliminate the tub and the window, and move the WC.

I’d put the shower where the bathtub is. And if you must have a tub, will a freestanding fit where the original shower is?

As others have said, your location and the COMPLETE scope of work is required. You will obviously tear out everything, including tile floor, shower receptacle to the studs, vanity replaced, lighting changed, etc.... Research carefully for the qualified contractors and get estimates, and be prepared to wait for qualified labor (and plan on longer lead times and higher prices than several years ago for fixtures and materials as well). Plan ahead and spend your money wisely so you are not re-doing substandard work in the future. What's your budget? Start there to determine if and what you can do or if waiting to get what you want and a quality outcome is a better approach.
