Measure from the back or front of storage for symmetry?

I'm trying to create symmetry within the entryway, centered along the front door. On one wall there is a long storage closet. Would it be better to measure from the back or from the front of the closet?

My answer is that you should measure from the front of the closet if you do drywall above the closet (like this picture).

If on the other hand, it's more like a free standing furniture then you should measure from the back of the furniture.

I'm not sure how I'd measure from floor to ceiling cabinetry. Sort of on the fence. Something like this:

Where should you measure from, the back or the front of storage to create symmetry?
