How would a dwarf crape myrtle look next to a landscape rock?

I have a (now dormant) dwarf crape myrtle (Berry Dazzle) which I would like to plant in the front yard of my little house. I was thinking that paired with about a 20" landscape rock, and perhaps a couple of small perennials, it might make a nice accent for the area where my sidewalk to the porch meets the city sidewalk. What think you shrub enthusiasts?

glad to see you pop up ... you just crossed my mind the other day .. wondering how all the renovations were going ... and how you were settling in ...

i dont know about your CM rock idea ... you know the usual .. need a pic of the spot you are thinking about ... etc ...

im sure you are going to have to spend some money on planting your new landscape.. im not sure a big rock would be money best spent at this phase of the project.. unless of course.. if you already have the rock ....

I love landscape rocks! We put them in our front yard of our current house and previous one. They look great in a naturalistic landscape but would look out of place in a more formal one IMHO. Don't know what your yard looks like but if you use them the bigger the better.

Were this tree mine, I'd up-pot it to a larger-than-necessary pot and leave it alone until spring at which time I'd properly repot it. I also have the experience of digging a landscape Crape Myrtle about this time of year, the week before 100ÃÂ°F+ temps, and it survived the procedure (with GORGEOUS gold and red foliage come fall). Still, I wouldn't recommend it, but its a testament to how resilient these can be if they're growing strongly.

Ken- I figured a 10 foot spread meant 5 feet in all directions (like a circle around the tree, 5 feet out) I made sure there was 5 feet of open space in all directions from center (brick wall behind and lattice work on right). Isnt this correct? I know it does not look like it is that 5 feet away from the walls but it is, I promise. Expose the root flares, got it. Will take care of that today. Will mulch soon - keep away from root flare as well?

Not all crape myrtle pruning is 'murder'. Detail pruning, the kind that directs growth, opens up the tree to good sunlight and circulations, is great! I can make a so-so crape into a piece of sculpture in 30 minutes without doing any 'topping' whatsoever. Ornamental trees and shrubs often benefit from intelligent and reasonable pruning. Walt, I find nothing objectionable about the pruning I observed on your trees. Dan, here's a story I've told here before, but before you joined us: I was called as a consultant to try to find out why nearly all of the large trees planted on a new construction site were declining rapidly after several weeks. I knew without getting out of my vehicle that they were all planted too deeply. That was the sole reason for the problems. In the SC heat, the trees died within a matter of a couple of months. At this inspection were the landscape architects, the landscape contractors, and the property owners. After I removed the mulch and dug down several inches, we came across all of the ropes AND straps AND wads of burlap still in tact. When I asked why, here's what the landscape architect said: "Oh, I asked that they leave all of that there so the trees would be easier to remove if they died." A SAD, but true story, lol!

Paula: Groff's sell annuals, perennials, and some shrubs. They do not sell common evergreens like azaleas, rhodendrons, hollies, etc. However, they do sell a lot of different deciduous shrubs. I bought the Fothergilla, the Little Henry, and the Pokomoke there. They also have three versions of Ninebark--Diablo, Summer Wine, and Coppertina. There are many other plants too and their stock looked pretty good last week I buy the general evergreens at Britestar Garden Center. They currently have a 40 percent off sale. I took all of their remaining Girard Crimson azaleas but there are about 20 others there of different types ($12 for regular size, $6 for smaller ones). They have about 20 Rhododendrons (good size ones for about $17). There are still some hollies, Abelias too. You'll find other things too. At Groff's you will find nice things for under $10. I bought 6 Weigelas, a Pokomoke, Little Henry, and the Fothergilla for about $80 including the tax. Groff's does not take credit cards--cash works best there but I think they might take checks. If you want to go to both, you can use Route 1 to travel from one to the other. Britestar is only about 200 yards north of Route 1 on the right. If you want to catch both, just get back on Route 1 and go 4 miles west to Route 472. Then go north to Kirkwood and take a left. The huge farms you will see on the way to Groff's are Amish. The corn and other vegetables are flowing at the roadside stands now. By the way, if you enjoy fine chocolate and you visit Britestar on Route 10, about 1/2 mile north of Britestar on the left side of Route 10, you will see a driveway for Neuchatel Chocolates. Hi, Ken, mojave. The interior of the house is all painted. The mirror wall in the DR has been removed and painted. We found a cartoon drawn on the wall and "1984" written, under the mirror, haha. The LR and the 2 smaller BRs now have beautiful ceiling fans/lights. Ordered plantation shutters yesterday. Just waiting to officially sign contractor to tile bathroom with the glass mosaic tile I got, remove old kitchen cabinets and install the new ones, tile kitchen floor and install new beefed up locks and stuff. Work is coming along.

Outside, no landscaping yet. I am using my MacbookPro, as my iMac died after 10 years and I'm waiting for new iMac to arrive. Thus, I don't have my stored current photos on this Macbook nor do I have my Photoshop. I had to copy a Google shot from 2 years ago to provide a picture and that shot is not current, as ALL the overgrown bushes are now removed, leaving plain grass. I want to put a landscape rock (not a huge one!) where the city sidewalk meets my sidewalk, on the side of the sidewalk opposite the driveway (don't want to create a hazard to scrape the car when I pull into the driveway). This crape myrtle gets 3-4' high and wide, with sort of cherry colored flowers. I wanted to put it behind the rock, and then plant a few smaller perennials around the rock, with a splash of annuals for color.

I would also appreciate suggestions for plants where those bushes once were. I don't want evergreens which have to be trimmed, and which provide burglars cover. This is a southern exposure, so roses would be good among the planting. You can barely see the 4' stone planter peeping out in front of the porch. I am raising Crimson Flame geranium cuttings this winter to fill that, to be joined by trailing portulaca and maybe petunias.

What a cute house! I actually like the landscaping in your pic but it sounds like you got tired of shearing shrubs. Although I love boulders, with your beautiful lawn i wouldn't put anything against the front sidewalk. Looks like with the shrubs removed you have a lot of room to plant in your foundation beds.

Of course its your dream yard and you can always change things around if you don't like something. Good luck with all your changes.
