do these bad pictures of an old Persian rug make it look okay?
Comments (21)Your rug appears to be quite a good one. It looks almost exactly like a 3 1/2' x 5' that I inherited from my parents, especially in the colors and patterns. I took mine for a cleaning about a year ago by an Oriental rug specialist out here and he explained to me the following, which possibly might apply to yours: Mine is an Iranian Sarouk and was imported to the States around 1918-1925. Sarouks were extremely popular then, but American buyers preferred heavier colors, so after arriving in the States the reds and darker blues were re-dyed to enhance them. If you turn the rug over it should show the exact detailed pattern, but in more pale hues (quite pretty actually). The dealer also said that my rug was worth around $3,000. He said that if well-cared for - vacuumed, occasionally cleaned, and kept free of pet stains it should last another 75 years. I've also been told that these rugs like bare feet on them; that's how they were originally made to be walked on. I think your parents' rug is a beauty and well-worth having! Google "Sarouk carpets" to learn more and compare colors and designs....See MorePersian rugs and dogs
Comments (11)My3dogs, you're the one who got me to start looking at persian rugs with your 2016 post of that wonderful ebay rug! Anele, we play outside when the weather permits. But yes, there are other areas where we could play so that not all the activity is concentated in this one space. Good to know about using beater bars on the low pile rugs. Makes sense, too. Gail, thank you for sharing your experience. I'll pay close attention to the condition and I agree 100% the patterns of these rugs will hide more sins than a solid or lighter colored rug. The rug I linked is also a bit too small, so I'll keep looking. Good to know that I don't necessarily need to completely rule out a persian rug!...See MoreKazak rug or Persian rug
Comments (11)I also wouldn't call that either Scandinavian or MCM in terms of style. There is no reason they couldn't go with MCM furniture or Danish modern or look well in an MCM home as they are beautiful and would work with any decor. I'm all for the well put together eclectic look as it feels to me as if the person had curated it rather than buying all at once :-) My best friend back in the day lived in an MCM home - although it wasn't called that back then because it was just a contemporary home LOL. Her parents both favored the rich bohemian look (before it was known as that). Her stepfather was a modern jeweler and as I recall they had rugs that had that kind of look and they blended well with their contemporary furniture - which would now be called MCM LOL. As I recall Rya Rugs were one of the trends back in the day or back in the MCM day. I had a Rya Rug in high school which traveled with me through my early first apartments. You might check Karastan rugs as I happened to be looking through their selection a few days ago online because I have a Karastan Rug that is about 20 years old and I was wondering if they still sell that pattern. They had a lot of rugs that looked in that style/motif you like and they appeared to be moderately priced - especially with sales on like the one Macy's is currently having. Of course, price is going to depend on size. ETA - And the Karastan Rug is the Kirman 717 so I guess it's a true classic since I loved it 20 years ago and I still love it. :-)...See MoreRed persian rug but what eles??? Help
Comments (17)What is the size of your rug and what is the size of your table? Is your rug 9'8" x 13'6"? If you want to seat 6 the table should be 6 feet, or 72 inches long, two feet per person on the sides and a person at each end. The table width is best at 42-45 inches to accommodate serving pieces, but sometimes they are narrower. If you want to seat 8 the table should be 8 feet, or 96 inches long. The rug should have three feet around the table's width and length at a minimum. You can swing a table that seats 6 easily and get a leaf to accommodate 2 extra people, or get a table for 8 if you want that on an ongoing basis. Are you committed to Elephant's Breath paint? Your rug's colors and your floor can work with your chosen paint color, but your table absolutely does not. Are you willing to get a different table? If so, I think you need a darker wood. It would be nice to have some sort of buffet in a wood tone that works with the table. You can hang a mirror over that buffet, and a starburst or round mirror works wonderfully, either in wood or a metal, there are so many choices. There is nothing wrong with your calligraphic art, and if you like it, get more, in fact you can get a very large one that speaks to you, maybe even a triptych that will cover a wall. Interesting geometric designs are nice too. There is blue in your rug, so it will work with your room....See MoreM H
