Is LVT next to hardwood really so bad?

I know there’s a million threads on this, but I’ve been searching for a new kitchen floor for about 6 mo and can’t find anything I like. I don’t like tile (it’s what I have now and I don’t like standing on it). The only LVT I like is a fabric look, and it’s impossible for me to find what i want (it’s either discontinued or not sold on the east coast, etc). I cannot put hardwood floors down or engineered hardwood b/c they both are too thick and it would affect my kitchen cabinets. There’s a 1/2” thick subfloor down and then tile. The previous owners bumped out and renovated the kitchen and put down tile. I’m stuck with the floor thickness the way it is. I also probably cannot afford hardwood in my 360 sq foot kitchen.

Anyway, can I use wood looking LVT that a darker shade and with wider planks than the wood it borders? The tile that’s there extends to the hall and front door, so when you walk in you would be walking on wood LVT that’s right next to the hardwood living room.

I’m including pics of the LVT I’m considering and also my cabinet lowers so you see what I mean.

How about a LVP that is a slate or stone look?

IMO you can put down hardwood since the floor will be much lower when the tile is removed and of course no matter what floor you get the tile needs to be removed . I agree no wood look but you could do a mice slate look for sure . Why is there no kick space for the cabinets , maybe post a pic of the whole space

I would get some test samples of the engineered wood - some people say it is great but we had Shaw engineered wood in our previous condo and although it was beautiful (new build) it was very fragile in our experience. Our cats' claws scratched the floor in some places, we have never had that happen with real wood or with our vinyl plank that we have now. Any little bit of water will cause damage - for example we dropped some ice cubes and one escaped our cleanup, it melted in a corner and caused the seams to warp - fortunately not in a noticeable area but any moisture on the floor easily damages it. Dropping anythng on the floor left large dents - I dropped a jar from the fridge and made a giant dent right in front of the fridge where it was very noticeable :( So in my experience, engineered wood is not very durable. For the subfloor issue, why can't you just build inset covers for the holes, make them flush with the rest of the existing floor, and eliminate that expense? We have vinyl plank - I ton't call it "luxury" as it was 8 cents/sq ft from Lowes (DIY installed) and no underlay required. We are very happy with it, I don't know if I would pay prices equivalent to engineered wood which is $7-10/sq ft installed.

I'm in the process of researching for my first remodel. I live in a small 1950's ranch on a cement slab in Anchorage, AK. The neighborhood is modest, basically a carpet/laminate/vinyl floor area. We live in a very wet climate - with 7-8 months of winter plus a lot of "rainy season" in the non Winter months. We currently have 3 cats, but plan to get another dog down the road and we like our dogs big. As part of the remodel, we are tearing down the wall that separates the kitchen from the entry/LR area. We also converted from a furnace to a boiler system. The "pipes" for the new boiler system got routed through the old channels for the forced air in the cement slab. We will be flooring over the holes where the old grates were, but cannot plug them up with cement for obvious reasons. I want the same floor throughout the public spaces of the house, which is basically the LR, den, DR and kitchen. Wood or a wood look is really important to me. The front door will have a tiled entry area but the back door is a slider leading out to the deck and will not have tile. Everywhere we go, they are recommending LVT. Glued down, as opposed to snap-together. They swear these floors will hold up to everything we can throw at them, that they don't scratch, they wear great, and are impervious to water. They say repair is a breeze with glue down in particular. However, the prices get competitive with engineered hardwood given the subfloor that will be required for the LVT so it can cover up those holes in the concrete for the old grates. And that makes me pause. I know hardwood., engineered or not, will add value to a home and LVT will not. On the other hand, LVT will apparently require little to no stress related to upkeep and damage. If the prices are equal, does it even make sense to consider LVT? Conversely, does price matter or is the real issue to consider what is going to hold up best in our situation? Do you agree with these assessments and WWYD (what would you do or recommend) in this kind of situation?

First and foremost, great idea with the wooden accent wall! They are on trend right now and it's a great addition to any room. With the being said, I do not think you will have a problem with the contrasting of each material so long as the colors of each jive. Textures, materials, and colors are always mixed with each other to give a room its own unique look and style. Also, gray is a universal color and you shouldn't have a hard time finding a floor that compliments the accent wall. The Flooring Blog

We bought about 600 sq. ft. of flooring based on first seeing a physical set of boards, then reviewing the swatch online and the example installation on their site. What was delivered however was so filled with blemishes, that 50% of the boards we unpacked contained such obvious visual defects that we refused to have it installed. Both the supplier, ProSource GTA West, and the Kraus representative refused to take the order back without a 15% restocking charge. What they advertise does not match what they deliver so don't use people or companies that don't stand behind their products.

I really only like fabric looking LVT. It’s so hard to find. I also don’t want gray, I want brown. I also don’t want rectangular, I want plank.

I’ll be painting the cabinets cream. I’m going for a warm look.

The floor won’t be much lower when the tile is gone. Maybe 1/4”?

Engineered hardwood seems a lot thicker than tile.

Would there be a height difference between the hardwood and the LVP? If they could sit flush with one another, I think it could work with a wide transition of LVP running perpendicular to the wood/planks. Otherwise, I am concerned about what the transition would look like.

Well I know all the pros usually say no! But I’ve been in 2 houses lately that had hardwood and wood look LVP installed beside each other. One looked nice, the other … not so much. It was warm wood beside gray wood look planks.

The LVT would be flush- or nearly flush to the existing hardwood.
The reason I’m considering this is b/c when I was looking at engineered hardwood, I was told it would work if the engineered was wider planks and a different stain than the existing hardwood. So wouldn’t LVT be the same principle?

I think part of the issue is that the vinyl looks fake when placed beside the real thing. An engineered product has a thin layer of actual wood on top. So it is real wood beside real wood. How thick is the underlayment the tile is on? When you remove that it may have enough thickness to allow for real hardwood.

You will have to take that underlayment out anyway. You can’t install LVP over the mortar on that plywood. Engineered comes in a variety of thicknesses.
