Highalt's 2012 Pepper Grow Log
Comments (96)Things are winding down now that the final harvest has come and gone, but there are still peppers to be processed. It took a total of 7 hours from the time I started peeling and chopping tomatoes, until the time I pulled the finished jars out of the canner! Here is today's project. Salsa It's by far the most time consuming thing I make with my harvest of tomatoes, peppers, and onions, but it's a family favorite, so it's a labor of love. I ended up with 10 pints, but only 9 would fit in the canner, so the last one will go in the fridge once it cools down. I used a combination of Jaloro jalapenos, Fresnos, Serrano Huastecos, Aji Yellows, Aji Chinchi Amarillos, and a couple of Trinidad Perfumes and Peach Habaneros. My 9 year old son says the heat level is on the high side of medium. For me, it just depended on which type of pepper I got in that bite, but I'm sure after it has sat for a few weeks the heat will even out as the flavors mingle. Most of the peppers from the final harvest have ripened that are going to, and they are starting to dry out some, so it looks like most of what is left is going in the dehydrator. I do plan to make one more batch of Peach Habanero Jam, and still have quite a few peppers in the fridge that need to get pureed and frozen, or dehydrated. So things are winding down, but I'm not quite done yet....See MoreOT Shetland Lace
Comments (6)Glad that you all chipped in; the more the merrier. Mary, Shetland until the fourteen hundreds was within the Kingdom of Norway but was given as part of the dowry of the King's daughter when she married into the Scottish Royal family (I can't remember off-hand the names and dates). As the islands are nearer Norway than Scotland (the nearest railway station is Bergen) and sea-trade was very important they had little connection with the Scots until a 'bad' Stuart was 'removed' there, where he built castles and was generally mean to the people. The traditional Shetland fishing boats are still built like Viking ships with high prows at either end, many Norse 'finds' have been dug-up as have remains of longhouses and . . . further back in time, Pictish brochs (high round towers). Frieda, the true Shetland dialect (though probably less marked these days) is almost impossible for incomers/visitors to follow and sounds like so much grunting; with the mouth hardly open (perhaps because it is often very windy up there . .. ). The small Shetland ponies, which used to run wild, are fascinating and can be quite fearsome as can the sheep. Way back, when I was a child, we attend a local 'sheep dog trials' just held on rough ground behind the Unst village where we stayed. No-way were the sheep going to co-operate with the dog or shepherd and the small flock disappeared over the nearest wall into the blue-yonder. Many incomers and much needed 'oil revenue' have probably changed the place I fondly remember but I think it fair to say the locals don't like to be thought of as Scots, nor will you see tartan, bag-pipes or kilts . . . but you will hear the fiddles being played and festivities/weddings etc that go on for several days! And I've gone on too long . . . Shetland Information...See MoreCommon misuse of words ?
Comments (335)Vee......you can substitute potato or fruit salad if you wish. I thought that macaroni /Mensa had a certain rhythm to it ! Okay....Macaroni salad, like potato salad, has many slight variations depending on the cook. Although I do not make it and rarely eat it I do recall that my aunt's involved elbow macaroni and chopped celery and onions which were "dressed" or mixed with mayonnaise and perhaps a tad of mustard .....of course salt and pepper to taste. Chill and serve. Kathy.....lol, that phrase is probably the polite northern equivalent of the southern "Bless her/his heart ! "...See MoreHOUSE TOUR I Gorgeous Hamptons House With a Verdant Garden
Comments (47)About the crib bumper legislation (which was introduced last year and signed into law this past May) -- it prohibits the manufacture, sale, and distribution of padded crib bumper pads (and inclined sleepers). However, I don't believe that even the "distribution" provision applies to homemade, home-sewn crib bumpers, which is the case above. So parents and parents-to-be need to educate themselves, and if Grandma wants to sew something, suggest something else. Bumpers aside, I very much appreciated her not overly decorated son's room and the use of furniture from elsewhere in the house on a temporary basis, until her son is older. I can't stand the recent social media trend of hyper-decorated "nurseries" which have the lifespan of a fruitfly, and then the blogger/influencer redoes the room when the kid becomes a toddler, again as a preschooler, again a few years later, etc....See MoreGizmo
