Here are some specifics: Bluekitobsessed: The paint is Devine Tide. In my experience, the saturated Devine paint colors IÂve used act as pleasing background elements rather than as a main event. This project included painting the hallway also and I used BM Buxton Blue. A lovely, sweet color, very pretty. But I find it stands out as a major player. The Devine color feels not as prominent, even though darker. So if your mother is worried about being overwhelmed by color, I donÂt think this paint will be problematic. Mooie, the clock is mine. It is killing me not to have a clock in the bathroom. I know it is peculiar, but I will probably put one back in that space over the door. All cabinets and vanity are Plato in cherry. They are custom. The wall tiles are plain old Dal-tile, arctic white with white grout. The floor tiles are Crosstile Buenos Aires Mood (porcelain) in the color Polo with quartz color grout. The 12 by 12 tiles are matte and textured, the 6 by 6 tiles are polished. The pebbles in the two niches are Momiscalco Botany Bay Pebbles in sea green. The sink is from Ronbow. The fused-glass piece on the window was made by a local glassmaker. We went over to her shop and designed the piece--picked various colors/shapes/textures under her direction, and she fused the glass and placed it on the window with four tiny dots of silicone. It was fun! The idea to put a piece of stained glass on the window was from a Garden Webber and solved the problem of how to have both light and privacy. The tub is a Kohler Archer and it is acrylic. I love it and find it an improvement over cast iron, which I was loath to part with (I loved my old tub, though you can see its best days were past). The acrylic is warm but not in a sickly way, and I believe, based on no facts, just my experience, that it holds heat better and longer. It is deeper, though narrower and shorter (or shorter feeling because of the sloped back). That works fine for us. It is not period, but perhaps if people in 1919 had an option, they might not have hauled a cast-iron beast up the steps. Ease of maintenance and whether it holds up over time are issues I canÂt address yet.

No, this is not a particularly usable plan: - Imagine you walk in that door. Where do you stand to close it? The only answer is, Scoot yourself between the sink and toilet to allow for the door to swing shut. If you have a walker, it can't fit in at all. A pocket door, as discussed, is one option, but if this elderly person has any problems with arthritus in the hands, pocket door hardware -- even good hardware -- can be problematic. The best choice is an outswing door. - I'd look at flip-flopping the shower and the sink. I think you might get a slightly larger shower if you do that. You could also go with a shower with solid walls half-way up, which would mean you could have good grab bars on BOTH SIDES of the toilet -- a very good thing for an elderly person. Don't neglect the grab bars on the inside of the shower as well, though they will cut into your usable shower space. I'd also look into the possibility of a small fold-down seat in this shower. - I don't love the idea of an all-wet room /open shower. In a room this size, you'll wet the door, toilet paper, towels, and everything else in the course of taking a shower. I think you'd create as many issues as you'd solve. - In this small space, I'm tempted to suggest a pedestal sink because it would require less space, and it would allow for more "visual space". However, that would take away the only storage you have in this bathroom. To gain more storage, I suggest a cabinet above the toilet AND some shallow between-studs shelving behind the door AND a small glass shelf above the pedestal sink. - You might alleviate some of the storage issues by providing a spot in this person's bedroom . . . a spot to sit down and dry her hair, take her medicines, etc. What I'm saying is use the bathroom ONLY for showering, toileting, and other necessities -- plan to use a bedroom spot for make up, hair, etc. - Where are you going to hang bath towels? I'm guessing the back of the door. Not ideal, but reachable from this small shower. For an elderly person with mobility issues, this bathroom is far from ideal. If you have any option to open it up and add more square footage, I'd try hard to do it. I've read all I can on this subject, and an age-friendly bathroom is at the top of our list for our retirement home; I've read that the ability to bathe oneself is usually the first thing people "lose", and a good bathroom will forestall that possibility.

Please take a look at my bathroom. This is an old bathroom with 80inch single vanity and I'm trying to update with 500$ budget. I am thinking of replacing the mirror into a framed one and also the light fixture. Can anyone help me with suggestions? For the mirror, should I get the round one or a rectangle?

The paradox of neighborhoods like McLean is that there will be a certain segment of buyers for whom nothing is quite right and they have the means and desire to remodel almost any home they move into. My friend lives in a similar very upscale neighborhood and regularly watched new kitchens being replaced every few years when the home changed hands. Of course there will always be a segment of the population that does want a home with finishes that reflect the upscale nature of the neighborhood. Hell there are people who are buying their relatively inexpensive starter homes that expect high end finishes on a beer budget. You don't state why you are remodeling. Do you even need to remodel the secondary bathrooms? I know this is heretical but if they are almost never used what does it matter what they look like. Are they functional? Unless you are enjoying the end results or this is for some other reason, you are not going to get a return on investment anyway. By the time you have to sell, the primary bathroom is going to be older anyway even if it was rarely used.
