Weatherproofing Terra Cotta Pots

I have several terra cotta pots that I have previously kept in the greenhouse during winter. I live 2 hours NE from Houston - our winters can get to 22 degrees - last year's "Snowmageddon" we got to 2. I have one pot in particular that is beautiful, a really large pot with a diameter of about 3 feet. I have just used it for decoration as I am afraid to put soil in it and have it crack during winter. It stays out all year as its too heavy to move but I would really like to plant something in it and have it protected to survive winter without cracking. Can anyone suggest a way to protect terra cotta pots so that they can remain out and planted during winter? I know to elevate the pots to keep them off the ground - but am afraid to plant this large pot only to have it crack in winter. Appreciate any suggestions!
