This is actually the basement of the house. I have not been in one of these in a long time, so I don't know if some have closed off kitchens or not.

Having had a dr open to the kit, I get wanting to screen the view from one to the other, but there's something that's too obvious and awkward about this solution. I just used to use light, turn the lights off in the kitchen while we were eating so the focus became the table and those around it. But it was one major reason why the new house has the dr around the corner from the kitchen....convenient but away from the mess.

Back in the day; Holloman AFB NM large ranch style home. Open concept but the kitchen wall that opened to the dining/living room area was a large counter with an accordion door you could pull across so the mess was gone. Great set up for a party buffet and mess gone when not. I think that's the first time I have seen counter seating that faces away from the kitchen work area. Takes in the view...but why would you need both given that with the table right there????

Notice that there is also a sliding door by the range, so the entire kitchen can be closed off. Since they have that, clearly they like to either entertain or cook in the nude and don’t want the voyeur across the way to watch.

The odd thing about the overhang is that it is over cabinets that open - making access rather difficult.

I think that's a fixed panel next to the stove. I'm not sure what I'd do if my only eating area was adjacent to an open kitchen. I guess it depends on how much space was available and how everything was laid out. We removed a half wall so now our kitchen, kitchen table and family room are open but our dining room and living room are separate and you can't see any part of the kitchen from those rooms.

I thought that the panel is moveable because it looks like there is a track on the floor that is covered up by a rug. But, there should be a track at the top, so I guess it isn’t a slider. Also, that kind of soffit usually contains ductwork or electrical, so a door couldn’t interrupt it.

These are pretty small houses so some people might have the room set up more like a family room and eat at the counter. I would probably rather face out the window in that case myself. There is a largish utility room with window behind the kitchen and I wonder if some have expanded the kitchen in that direction.

Though not pretty , this exeecution has benefits above the earlier one posted. It is not only visibility of mess that I dislike about open kitchens. It is often more the noise, smell and extra heat from the kitchen imposing upon the living space that bothers me. This kitchen can at least lessen the smell and sound and extra heat from escaping if needed.

Here , I think, is a more aesthetic and expensive way to achieve what the above kitchen did.

Regarding the skinny wall next to the fridge: because the footprint of many houses and apartments here is quite small. The builders would save a few inches wherever they could get it. Many of the houses will not have a single wall inside that it a bearing wall, except maybe holding up part of the staircase. So you will have partitions that are three layers of drywall sandwiched together or things like this:

This is in my house. We are taking it down, and obviously it's not load bearing. Actually we are not quite sure how it stays up.
