need help figuring out cabinet/wall colors for this old kitchen
Comments (8)A trick I used for brick/tile was overlaying with non sanded tile grout. Then painted it. I didn't want the brick to show at all. Am assuming here that your brick is thin. Even wall board paste would work, sealed and painted. The other is to just remove the brick, a big job, then recover with wall board. I just prefer no brick at all. As for the doors, painting is a huge task. You may want to reface if money/time is there. Or paint the bottom doors only and cut opening in the top ones for glass or another material. You could also insert panels within the trim. One of my favorite kitchens is from the set of Two and a Half Men, they painted the doors two different colors (insert/outside trim). Kitchen doors always take a lot of work, but many here have done some wonderful redos of existing cupboards with instructions on how they did so. I'm not great on colors, they are a personal touch. My kitchen is terracotta, off the grid of most. One of the kitchens here was with black cupboards on the bottom and top ones a contrast. Loved that kitchen....See MoreI can't figure out how to paint this section of my kitchen
Comments (6)You need a scaffold board. FOr this to work, you have to have rungs of your ladders at the same height, and you lay 2x12 boards across so that you can reach what you need. Clamp the boards to the ladder for safety. To get to some of the areas, you can use your pony wall as support for one end of the scaffolding and the ladder for the other end, coming out perpendicular to the counter. You'll have to move it a lot more, but you should be able to reach most of the areas that way....See Moreneed help figuring out cabinet/wall colors for this old kitchen
Comments (4)I love those cabinets (but not in that color!). For inspiration on painting that brick, look at subway tiled kitchens. Squint and pretend they are painted bricks. See? Looks good! Are you sure they're fake brick? Not that it really matters. It looks like a neat place--congratulations! I had cabinets just like that in my first house, but they were avocado green. I painted them white. I've missed them ever since. My counter had an ivy patterned Formica, so I didn't have the counter worry you do. (Hey you have a matching bifold door, already painted white!) But they do in fact look great in white. So, if you're keeping the counter, and why not, what about using white on the upper cabinets and a totally different color on the base cabs? Like a deep yellow or blue or well, you get the idea. The brick/backsplash area would then be a nice accent color, maybe. Were you going to keep the brick bricky? It isn't bad, and it looks good with more colors than you think. It ought to look good with yellows and tans. Cabinets are hard to paint (but worth it). Get that color right the first time. The brick, if painted, can't ever be brick again. But walls are easy. Go ahead and be daring....See MoreCan someone help me figure out material this is and how to clean it?
Comments (13)Maybe someone here with more knowledge about it than me could weigh in, but I wonder if you could do a skim coat of something like self leveling concrete to cover all the stains, then apply some coats of a food safe sealer over the top. I can't imagine that would look any worse than what's there and might be a short term solution. use on countertops...See MoreCheryl V
