Accent color for red dishes...help me spruce up my mom's kitchen!
Comments (8)Thanks for the responses! I'm sorry the example pic is so terrible. It's just a pic I found on the web and not my mom's Christmas table, I swear. Sue and Yayagal, those are the two colors I thought of right away! Glad to know I'm thinking in the right direction. Fun, love your suggestions about scrapbook paper. I know that will definitely help my mom with visualizing a color. And I really like the fabric idea too. I'm hoping I can convince my mom that the old red and cream buffalo check cafe curtains have had their day and fabric behind the dishware would bring nice texture back in the room. I will try to get a picture this weekend when I go visit her. She lives two hours away and is not computer savvy. I wanted to get some direction before I went so that we could get started. My youngest brother is moving out this month (he bought the house next door....we joke that one day he will leave the block!), so it will be just she and my dad for the first time in 35 years. She is going to downsize the big table in the middle of the room (she still has a large table in the DR for family gatherings) for a smaller breakfast nook in the corner by the windows and put a moveable island in its place....See Morekitchen spruce up help
Comments (18)Assuming this is a sellers' market, I would: - Replace pendants diy ($300) - paint walls ($100) (only if that green is only in the kitchen - if it's throughout the house, and the rest of the house is decorated circa 2005, then not worth it) - new backsplash ($2000) - new countertop ($4000?). And while you're at it, convert the island to a single level, which should cost much if you're also taking out the countertop - new stools ($500 - remove curtain (free) - apply the bona floor refinisher on exposed area of hardwood throughout the house, without removing carpets. ($20) If a sellers' market, I think spending $8000 on kitchen updates would probably get 100% or more recouped, and more importantly, sell your house more quickly. And frankly, if I'm a buyer looking at $1m+ homes (in any part of the country), I don't think it's unreasonable to expect that a seller would have spent $10k or more getting the house up to snuff. So i don't think this is a crazy amount to spend. Painting the cabinets is a disastrous idea, which is almost as expensive as new cabinets and/or ends up looking cheap. Painting the island would look horrendous in this kitchen -- slapping a 2015 trend on a 2005 kitchen, and would just highlight the fact that the kitchen isn't new. And certainly don't bother re-doing the floors. If it's a buyers' market, i wouldn't do anything....See MoreISO flush mount light suggestions for galley(ish) kitchen
Comments (7)track light installs where your current light is. Im not sure what the "this is a rental apartment and we are only able to use the spots where the current fixtures are." means but there are lots of options. i would suggest that for the kitchen https://www.lampsplus.com/products/pro-track-globe-brass-4-light-led-plug-in-track-fixture__67k76.html something simple like this in hallway https://www.wayfair.com/Wrought-Studio%E2%84%A2--Mager-1-Light-8-Simple-Globe-Semi-Flush-Mount-X111002949-L6086-K~W000991838.html?refid=GX433658446000-W000991838_1268382334_1268382335&device=c&ptid=904701342955&network=g&targetid=pla-904701342955&channel=GooglePLA&ireid=73447144&fdid=1817&PiID%5B%5D=1268382334&PiID%5B%5D=1268382335&gclid=Cj0KCQjwk8b7BRCaARIsAARRTL6LxvChFugPao-PmvBUq-rnOj8qNVJguVJBYXaKN1J-YFwQLL4bLzgaAmwHEALw_wcB...See MoreLooking to Spruce up Kitchen
Comments (8)I like the black. The birdcage style is a little bit older and traditional. What about black in a transitional style piece? I think the floor and counter could stay and a new backsplash with again a cleaned up transitional vibe [white subway] would give a new lease. Unusual layout. RE: barstools- I might go and get something upholstered. it looks like a good perch even if the two only. I am not opposed but I'm not gung ho about roman style shades. Again: very traditional. Newer cellular shades in cleaned up look will tilt you to more transitional space....See MoreKendrah
