So this is your back door I assume, and it looks like that is the door that everyone uses to enter the house??? Do you have a front door? Where do you eat? We really need a little more information about how you use the area.

This is how we enter the house, kitchen area, we eat by the counter top and have a formal dining room pass the kitchen , to the left( not shown on the pictures)

Add a standalone wardrobe on the wall where the clock is now so you can get all the coats and boots and shoes out of your entry. A nice bench under the window and a large rug will make this a welcoming entry and pass through area.

I agree with Angel, it’s difficult to say without much more information. This appears to be a ”mud room” where everyone comes in and takes off the (now) winterwear. There is baseboard heating on one wall, and what appears to be a full size radiator under the window which would make it difficult to do a builtin eating space. Plus, that would take away from your space where folks are coming in with boots and shoes and taking them off.

If you have a space for informal eating, a breakfast nook so to speak already, one possible idea for the wall with the baseboard heating might be a workspace with a low profile desk suspended from the wall. It would be located adjacent to the kitchen, which might come in handy while planning family meals and activities. For an example, please visit my site, jarretyoshida.com and go to my portfolio. Oh, more pics. Yes you need storage area for coats, shoes etc, so are are not seeing them when working in the kitchen. A couple of comfortable chairs to sit on while taking off shoes that could be used for sitting when guests are over and you are in the kitchen. Maybe a small table inbetween chairs.

Well, it's designed for a kitchen table, but you clearly need it as a mud room, so I don't really think it can be both. I'd scrap the table and either go all "entry" with a wardrobe for the coats and a bench or two for taking shoes on and off, or leave the coat hooks and shoe area and make a seating area on the long wall, with a couple of arm chairs and a table/lamp. The trick is that in wet or snowy weather, you're always going to be tracking in a mess, so you won't really be able to full civilize the seating half.

Might be better to go with a long slim sofa/bench, with baskets under it for shoes, a washable all-weather rug that encompasses that half/corner of the room (leaving the walkway to the back door and to the counter seating free), and just enough decor (nice cheery poster over the sofa, a lamp at one end, etc) to make it seem like a friendly seat and to make it a place somebody could read in the less messy season.

These couches come in a 5-foot option, for example -- you could put a floor lamp in the corner and basically leave the shoe bins where they are.

Looks like you have a nice dining area. Use that as your "family " eating area.

You don't need 2 eating areas anyway. Make sure it's family friendly. Not formal.

You could consider turning that window next to the door to the back deck into a door and removing the door to the back deck, giving yourself some more wall space to work with while still not making it overly dark in the room. It might give you more options.

I'm not sure it'd provide enough room for a small corner table but you could do some better built-ins for storage for shoes/coats etc.

You have a dining room, and two stools at the bar...so that's good. What if you get rid of the bench/baskets and replace it with a different bench which accomodates seating and storage?

I think this inspiration picture works for you. Storage bench, cushion, throw pillows, mirror for over chair rail and a fun rug.

I like your wall color, but do you think doing something on that one solid wall would add a bit of impact? I refuse to say use "ship lap" because the photo posted, that is not authentic ship lap, but I like the horizontal paneling look.

You could also do a stick and peel wallpaper.

if you go ahead w apt sized couch like that gray one I'd get the computer stand that moves on wheels that can be off to the side or pulled in front. I'm always creating and editing little spots around for computer use while actually having a comfortable seat. I just wouldnt find the peninsula stool comfortable for very long so you may as well get the upholstered piece ..an investment..... Just size it correctly and I know it would get use.

Similiar to a loveseats, a small sofa isnt really practical. 2 people won‘t sit on it together unless they are a couple. What about 2 smaller upholstered chairs in the corner with a small table and floor lamp? For a reference, borrow some chairs from another room to see if it does the job. I agree with other posters that storage is equally important since you use this room as a mudroom/entry.

Please summarize for us - do you need entry/mudroom to gather stuff?

I thought there's nothing wrong with the table you have, but I'd rotate it. Possibly an island could look "non kitchen-y" and be placed against the wall like any other item would be.

I'd consider removing the chair rail, because it looks 'busy'...
