Help!! Kitchen(Cave) Remodel/Update on a BUDGET
Comments (16)I think the light fixture's yellow glass shade is probably contributing to the problem, so I would take it off and get a better read on the cabinets and countertops. The next thing I would do is remove the wall paper. Where the wallpaper is in front of the window to the left of the sink, what is that, some kind of valance? Can it be removed, it is blocking sunlight. Then remove the cabinet handles and give them a good cleaning with a degreasing product. In our last house they cleaned up and got about three shades lighter. You will need to thoroughly clean before painting anyway so this will not be wasted work. I have even had to scrap layers of built up grease off with a razor blade- ick. I kind of like the green color of the Iaminate. The full splash makes it a bit intense but it is probably just a thin sheet of the laminate glued to the wall and may come down very easily. It could also be covered it like nosoccermom suggested. Two full height stainless backsplash panels can be gotten pretty cheap at HD or Lowes. I don't know your storage needs, but you could remove all the uppers on the sink wall and the backsplash, You could do a small splash behind the sink to protect from water, it could be stainless, or tile, and then do open shelves on that wall. If you do decide to paint the cabinets, think a soft grey-green would look nice. If you can remove the backsplash, I think I might go with a chocolate brown on the lowers and a light off white on the top....See MoreHelp! $2000 Budget for Kitchen Remodel
Comments (50)You can make your money go twice as far if you learn some DIY skills, because you won't have to pay for labor. I'd suggest finding a set of used cabinets on your local CL and installing them. Golden oak are the most common, which isn't au courant, but will be better than diagonal fake-wood laminate. We just helped my DSS/DIL renovate a cheap old house, and they paid $400 for a set of cabinets that fit into their space (you have to get measurements of everything in the listing and then see if it fits), and just had to buy one upper and one pantry cabinet to fill it all in (golden oak cabinets are still in stock at the big box stores). They spray painted them with pewter spray paint (I had my doubts, but it turned out better than I expected) and will put stock laminate counters on them. Used appliances on CL as well (people are often selling whole packages of white/black as they're remodeling to SS). There may be some electrical or plumbing work, if you don't like the current layout....See MoreI did it! Kitchen Remodel on a budget...
Comments (43)@tuckerdc I will try to be what I wanted to hear when I was tackling this. It's gonna be tough, but if you are determined, you can do it. I will say this. I watched a ton of renovation videos, a lot of videos on YouTube about painting laminate cabinets and what brushes and paints to use for the best results. I did a lot of Pinteresting through this (my username is MrsDVazquez if you want to follow my renovations board), and read a lot of articles. I'm also pretty handy and have tackled other renovations before, though much smaller than this. I would strongly suggest getting some help from friends that might know a bit more or that at least can help with the lifting and working of things (like our countertops) as these are not projects you can do alone. In the absence of that, consider task rabbit if you can't afford a professional, though I would highly recommend a professional with some knowledge. My dad used to make cabinets many years ago, so I had good assistance with that. Take your time planning so when you are ready, you know where to start. And have a clear vision for what you want. Look up photos anywhere you can of the full vision to see if it makes sense in the end. Make sure you stay on budget, read tons of reviews on the products you are using, and then be ready for some hard, but rewarding work. Good luck to you!...See MoreLimited budget for full kitchen remodel. What to do "on the cheap"?
Comments (11)If you have a good layout, changing out cabinets for new cabinets does not have to be break the bank expensive, especially if you do not need custom. Many of the home center stores carry good quality, made in the USA cabinets. They are less expensive because they come in standard sizes only, rather than being custom made. We had the same problem 20 years ago - cabinet doors falling apart and falling on the cook - that would be me. We also thought we would be moving in 5 years - we didn't, so keep that possibility in mind. We used Medallion and they are sill in fine shape. I've also used Shrock with good results. There are often different levels within a brand - don't go with the cheapest. I don't know if Ikea is less or not. The cost of removing old cabinets and replacing with new without moving plumbing or electrical is doable. If your layout is not good, see how much it would cost to improve it. Since you don't have a picture, I can't tell. The biggest problem I often see is stovetops on small islands - hard to vent and difficult to cook at - something like that would be best moved to the perimeter. If laminate counters are the standard in your area, that is fine. If you do go with a laminate, but want to have an interesting sink, the Kohler Vault is a stainless steel apron front sink that has a version that can be top mounted. It is a little more than a standard stainless under mount, but might add a bit to the kitchen if that is your style. Home center stores have kitchen sales frequently - like every 4 to 6 weeks, so don't feel pressured into making a decision because the cabinets are on sale....See MoreLaurie Fryett
