I just realized I have nothing red in the garden...
Comments (11)Red is one of my favorite colors in the garden, and I still don't feel like I have enough red flowers! So far, I have Achillea 'Walter Funke', Achillea 'Paprika', Gaillardia 'Burgundy', Gaillardia 'Goblin' (red & yellow), Lychnis chalcedonica, Penstemon pinifolius 'Compactum', Rudbeckia 'Cherry Brandy', several daylilies, and dianthus. Dianthus 'Ideal Select Red' is listed as an annual, but mine usually come back a 2nd, and sometime third year, plus it wintersows well. This year, I sowed 'Sooty' and 'Black Magic', and can't wait to see them bloom. Crocosmia 'Lucifer' is also a great red, but mine didn't return this year. I think it's borderline hardy for my zone. Here are a couple pics of my reds: Lychnis chalcedonica Gaillardia 'Burgundy' Dianthus 'Ideal Select Red' Achillea 'Walter Funke' BTW, I'm hosting the Color of the Month Swap on the Round Robin forum, and the color this month happens to be red : ) Sign ups are until the 14th, and there is no minimum required to participate, so if you want to increase the red in your garden, please join us! Now my clay soil is black, easy to dig, and full of worms who have somehow found my garden. Never needed to add them. I think if you just add lots of organic matter to your soil, the worms will come....See Morenice - your red bb on garden junk

Comments (11)An old fashioned and truly red perennial is the Lychnis calcedonica, called the Maltese Cross. Because pink, orchid, purple, etc, are not my choice, I grow any number of white clones, like the white Phlox 'David', 'Miss Lingard' and Phlox sublata and stolonifera. Also Mazus repens 'Alba', Irises tectorum and reticulata 'Alba, the white Obedient Plant, Physiostegia virginica, and more. I have not been successful with the Cardinal Flower, but you might be....See Moreprairiemoon2 z6b MA
