First red tomatoes - Garden progress
Comments (0)I was pleased to find 3 nice red tomatoes today on a 4 foot high caged Stupice plant. Each tomato was about 1.5 inches in diameter which is what I think should be expected from that variety. This is exactly day 52, The plants were grown in a two year 50/50 mix of top soil and leafgro compost supplemented this year with a bit of composted cow manure. No fertilizer of herbicides. Weather conditions have been perfect except the need to water. Early girl still green fruits. The other varieties (13)are fruiting well also. The peppers are big and green but none changing to colors yet. The beans are ok with Smeraldo having rust issues due to overhead watering I suspect. Sprayed with a Bacillus Subtilis spray. The sugar peas did poorly this year. Lots of snap and snow peas. Okra is at 2 feet with a few pods each. Eggplant doing ok despite serious flea beetle damage. Onions are crowded by weeds. Need to be less lazy. Asparagus is 7 feet high. Cucumbers are sweet and non-bitter and coming in nicely despite some deer damage to the end growth. Picked last cabbage, broccoli, and cauliflower (fremont)and they did ok. Corn (Honey Select) has managed to survive the deer so far. Now 3 - 4 feet high. No ears or tassels yet. Some with side shoots. Not surewhat to do about the side shoots? Would enjoy hearing how others in the mid-Atlantic are doing. Scott Owings Mills, MD...See MoreRed, White Old Garden Roses, etc.
Comments (13)Some of the most beautiful red hybrid perpetuals that do well in my area include Francois Premier, Henry Nevard, and Comtesse O'Gorman. I bought them all from Eurodesert when it was closing. All were performing wonderfully in the desert where that nursery was located and all have done well in my inland empire garden which while still hot, is much less so than where Eurodesert was. All these reds are of a cooler hue (with bluish tones). All three are very fragrant and repeat. Comtesse O'Gorman has a lower, more spreading habit than the other two, and she will tip root if given the chance. Francoise Premier grows in a small to moderate sized vase shape. Both of these have flowers packed with petals. Henry Nevard tends to grow in a vase shape and is a stouter more "beefy" plant. Flowers don't have quite as many petals as the others but they are more cup shaped (versus the others being flatter). I remember when shopping for red hp's in Cliff Orent's garden, that he said to me that others told him Henry Nevard was a dog for them, however it had performed well for him. I bought it and have been pleased. None of the above three have disease in my garden where pressure for rust and mildew are high. However, blackspot is a seldom-seen malady here, with a only a few varieties I've had over the years being afflicted, so I don't know how they would do in an area where blackspot is a problem. For white ones maybe Frau Karl Drushki (although not fragrant) or Karl Forster? For pale pink my favorite is the alba Felicite Parmentier. For sheer beauty of flower and fabulous perfume she has few peers, however she is only a once bloomer. Another that I think is gorgeous is the new import to the US, Siwa. She is a dog rose hybrid. Flowers look very similar to FP and possibly just as fragrant. Mine is a recent introduction to my garden so I don't know about rebloom yet. Foliage is lovely however, and the plant seems to tolerate shade (as does Felicite). Absolutely clean foliage. Vigorous growth (mature size not know yet). Souvenir de la Malmaison is also a beautiful rose, although it doesn't seem to perform quite as well as the other two in my garden. Comments (1)I started building flower/veg beds in Nampa about 7 years ago using the lasagna method. No rototilling at all; just grass clippings, leaves, compost. Now my clay soil is black, easy to dig, and full of worms who have somehow found my garden. Never needed to add them. I think if you just add lots of organic matter to your soil, the worms will come....See MoreRed faced... Garden Treasure, Garden Party
