How can I make my living room look nicer?
Comments (21)Purplish tones like your wall can be very sophisticated when used with neutral colors. If you tape a piece of white paper on on the wall and then take a photo of it in daylight and night, we'll have a better idea of the true color. Different light bulbs and different computer screens can cause colors to look off, and the white paper gives us a baseline. If you don't want to spend a lot on decor, second hand stores are a great resource. People get tired of stuff, or move, and their things no longer look right. I'm also a fan of spray paint. If a picture frame, or maybe a large bowl/platter for your coffee table, is the right size and shape, it can be any color you want including metallic. It could be something from a resale store or something that you already have in another room. The new spray paints will stick to just about anything. Post some pictures as you go along and I'm sure we'll have some more suggestions. Do you have anything in other rooms that you think might work here?...See Moreplease help me make my living room less "cold" feeling .
Comments (6)The built-in is beautiful. I have never seen an application like that. Unfortunately, it only accentuates the vault and all that wall with NOTHING. SOOO much wall and really nothing to be done with it. Interesting visual--your clocks, but I think they would make a bigger statement if displayed closer together. To me shelves are for books--mostly so I want to see a few of yours with some books, just because that is expected. The larger couch does appear to be too far away to really watch TV from. What is behind it? Is that a wall? Perhaps moving it in a closer L with the love seat would cozy things up and give you a new space for a games table or sofa table?...See MoreMy living room stresses me out! Comments (14)--Paint living and dining rooms a warm white so they all seem to be one space. (I can't tell what color walls are. Next time, show well lit rooms in daylight.) ----Long, low white shelf/cabinet across the entire TV wall with just TV above since it's so large. This will streamline the room tremendously. No art around TV since screen. Relocate favorite art pieces--not decor items like mirrors or clock--to a gallery wall in dining room--best art works only. Lose the big blue bottle and other "stuff" on the floor. The room needs something call "negative space," open areas that add airiness to a room. It takes awhile to get used to negative space, but it feels calming after a while. --Move corner chair to face the other armchair with floor lamp in that corner to the left of TV. --Get a rectangular coffee table up on legs so its reachable from all seating. These gives you a conversational connection. --Remove side table and table lamp. It's blocking flow, which is stressful. That will make a bigger difference than you think. This way people can move around the couch from either end. --Sorry, but declutter all stuff from dining room as well since it adds to the visual clutter of both rooms. --Put smaller round dining room mirror by front door with a shelf there for keys, etc. Having a funcitonal place for practical items is destressing. --Remove living room mirror entirely. It's is too big and reflecting all the clutter. --No plaid throw hanging off sofa. If you need it to curl up, fold it in a nice basket. --...See MoreCould you help lighten up/make this living room less masculine?
Comments (15)You have great basics to start with. Adding color will lighten up and add a soft touch. You will get the most bang for your buck by painting and window treatments. Paint the room a pale blue or pale yellow, or any color for that matter, to set the tone. The pics posted show how the sofa and rug are not the focus, it's the accessories. Once you paint, match the curtain panels (ceiling to floor) to the color of the walls. I find that if you put together an inspiration board, you will notice how a vein of the colors you respond to will guide your choices. This pic has a simple white molding right above the sofa height, with the color of the wall above it and below forcing your eye to the art and color. Adding interesting cubes as a coffee table makes them front and center. A pale yellow tone on the wall and window treatments, colorful art and throw pillows is an easy way to transform the room to something more feminine. Consider peach walls with a brown undertone As you can see the focus is completely off the brown sofa using vibrant color in art and accessories I know you mentioned a lighter room, but consider a teal paint. The grey sofa will seem purposeful with art and pick up solid color pillows. Consider a light beech coffee table....See Morekkaccordion
