Potato Bin...first year!
Comments (11)I'm drawn the the idea as well but want to find out if it really will work. So I decided to do an experiment this year. I'm growing my potatoes in two pyramids. The bottom tier will just be my regular bed height with the potatoes hilled. The next tier will be a short tower (around 2 ft high), and the third tier will be a taller tower (3-4 feet). I'll plant all the seed potatoes at the same time and tower them as they grow. Since they'll all be in the same bed, same sun, same watering it'll be interesting to see which plants produce the most. I'm growing the German Butterball which I've seen recommended as a good tower potato. The other variety will be NorDonna. It's labeled as a medium-late variety. I haven't seen anyone who has grown this in a tower but it was one of only a few red skin varieties that were available to me locally. I'll be keeping track of my planting and harvesting on my blog and will keep you posted as to the result at the end of the season. Comments (13)Actually, health wise, sweet potatoes are even better for you than Irish potatoes. They have a lot of Beta Carotine and fiber. Carrots are good too, especially when you juice them with other fresh veggies and maybe an apple too. Juicing releases the enzymes and makes them readily available to our bodies to use to heal ourselves. I'm not talking using a blender, that leaves a lot of fiber for a sick body to work thru, but a fairly good, low heat juicer. When I get sick I start juicing everyday and it's not long before I'm well. Wishing your son a speedy recovery....See Moreanyone want to talk about carola potatoes?
Comments (4)mclaughlin, Who in the world doesn't want to talk about potatoes...heck I've even been known to dream about them...but that is another story. To me there is a huge difference between a fresh out of the ground potato and those that I lug home in a 5lb plastic bag from the super market. Not being familiar with 'Carola' of course I googled and the folks at Daves had some positive things to say but I was most impressed with the potato blog below. Now if you are cooking up such a yummy breakfast on a Saturday morning please share with us what youÂre cooking for Sunday morning. I will mention the last time I grew potatoes I lined the bed with straw which made for a cleaner easier to dig potato. Comments (63)Yesterday's work. I prefer the pots to have mixed greens. So I trimmed some bushes a tish that needed it to add to the spruce I got the day before. A bff asked how much these cost me. MAYBE 2dollars??? We went out to get dowels from Menards for the bag of large pine cones I picked up for fifty cents at a garage sale last month. The rest I purchased the year before. Mom's pot was returned so I refilled it and the rest I collected last year. My daughters will be home for Thanksgiving and we always spend a few hours re-filling their pots. When you don't have evergreens on your property--or they don't need a trimming keep your eyes out!! I have wondered if it would work to buy an old fake tree at the church garage sale (usually under a $1 as they don't sell) and use the branches as filler...what a PITB to store, however....See MoreHU-422368488
