Thinking about painting cabinets

Thinking about painting our kitchen cabinets at some point (new cabinets aren't an option in the near future). The cabinets are all in good shape but thought it might freshen up the kitchen if we painted them (most likely white). We also need to paint the walls/ceiling at some point and have already purchased a stainless backsplash for the stove. The counters are a brown granite but I think it would bring out the lighter colors in the stone if we painted the cabinets.

I tried using a paint visualization website but it doesn't really help me see what it would look like. Does anyone have the ability to easily make the cabinets white?

The problem here is the lighting, its making everything more orange, and there is not much of it. I think investing in "better" lighting is a good place to start.

Actually i think your cabinets look ok. improved lighting and wall paint would be a plus.

texasjerry, there is a current thread over on the kitchens forum, I think it's igloochic who gives very specific advice on painting kitchen cabs. The thread is about white paint too, so it might be helpful. I have personally found that zinzer 123 is wonderful for painting surfaces that would otherwise need to be sanded. The kitchen is not your best feature...but the rest of the house is beautiful. The green paint is making the kitchen 'pop' when you want it to blend in with the other spaces. So, as already suggested, paint the kitchen walls to match the breakfast nook. Then, think about your buyers.... Do you have a family home? Are you appealing to people with children? If so, I would lose the tray with drinks/beverages....and replace with bowl of fruit and a big cookie jar. Also, bake cookies or apple cinnamon pie/bars before open house. The smell of chocolate chip cookies or apples and cinnamon will really help your appeal. Worked for my mom! She got three offers that day :)

you have beautiful cabinets that go perfectly well with existing countertops and backsplash. If you paint you need to pick a very warm white..like very warm cream. you can do that if you dislike your grain; but has to be a pro job I think; won't be cheap. I personally love your grain, and would work with the existing stain,which is already pretty light, maybe changing hardware..but of course you should like it not me. Just won't be cheap..or in case you do it yourselves-will be very labor intensive..as mentioned in previous comments.

If you want a gray and black kitchen, yes it will work if you choose the right gray. My personal opinion? Gray cabinets with gray floors and black counters are going to look dark, cold, and colorless and the gray trend has about run its course. Plus you already have the small splash in your counter material, so you would need to remove that if you put a backsplash material on the wall. Hopefully not gray. I don’t hate all gray kitchens, but not every kitchen lends itself to the look. Your current cabinets, counter and floor look nice to me.

Do you have under cabinet lighting? LED under cabinet lighting is veryuseful and creates a nice effect.

Photos sometimes don't show that cabinets are old and tired, but you say they are in good shape. Before I spent any money on paint, I would get an electrician in to add recessed lights to the kitchen. If you want to lighten the space even further, then I would change the counters to a light off-white or cream color. Those 2 things will really brighten up your kitchen.

If you changed the counters, it also looks like you could fit a slightly larger sink into that sink cabinet.

Agree, better lighting should be the first step. Maybe paint the base of the island a lighter color. I’d leave the cabinets and countertops alone for now. Just wondering if the stove top is safe since I don’t see a back guard.

If you do paint the cabinets, be careful not to use too bright a white. You need a warm white if you're keeping the counters. Your floors are also a warm color. Always a good idea to improve your lighting. Painting cabinets is a big job if you DIY, it's not like painting walls. Be sure to research how to do it right or else you'll negatively affect the value of your home and not like the results. That's why I have to agree with the poster who suggested keeping the cabinets the same and changing the counters.

I like the wood finish and don't think that painting them white would improve the look of the room. And with that many cupboards and the wood detail on them, painting will either be expensive or a huge do-it-yourself job.

Is your kitchen dark to work in, or is it the photos?

If you want to paint make sure you 100% coordinate the color with your countertops. Choose whatever the lightest color in your counters are. Anything else will look too stark. This might mean that you end up with a light beige, but it will still lighten things up, and believe it or not beige is back!

I'm loving the color Alabaster White right now, and I'm thinking that could also work in there. Here is a pic of that color on cabinets.

I think you could also benefit from adding some rugs in the kitchen!

Before you do anything at all, get some more lighting in there, and make sure the bulbs are a daylight type led. Your lighting is way to yellow.

I personally wouldn’t paint those. The wood seems pretty nice. Painted cabinets are never going to be no maintenance, and it’s a pretty extensive undertaking. But if you are dreaming of white kitchen, then go for it.

Yes on better lighting, not just brightness but color tone. Maybe something around 2800 to 3000 kelvin. If you do paint the cabinets consider just painting the top. Personally I like the wood cabinets but do not like the brown granite countertops.
