The widest I have seen are Ikea's lack shelves, but unless it is a compact DVD player, I'm not sure it would fit (it'd hang over the front edge). Also, think about what you would do with the electrical cord: Do you mind it draping off the side of the shelf? Because floating shelves are put up flush to the wall, so although I guess you could drill a hole in the back of the shelf for the cord, you'll still see the cord, and that won't be a pretty sight. OH WAIT! Unless you have an outlet close above where the shelf will be so you don't see the DVD player plugged in! (I guess it wouldn't cost a fortune to get an electrician to do it, but it seems a waste.) Anyway, the Lacks are 10 and a quarter inches deep.

Why, when they say between 8 and 12, do we waste time getting there first thing? Well, at 10:30, he showed up and I have a perfect, brand new windshield. Safelite gave us a nice discount for not showing last week, so my $270 windshield was $209. Cool. Then my friend, who has been a pro painter for years and years, came over with her son. He's also a pro and has been painting with her since he was 15. That was 18 years ago. :) They whipped out the 1st coat, including the ceiling in about 2.5 hours, with breaks. My friend is a cancer survivor, so she tires easily. It's a big room; it would have taken me 2 days. My MBR is now an really gorgeous, soothing Glidden 'Natural Wicker' with the ceiling 50% lighter. Matched at SW. It's very subtle but I am shocked at what a difference paint makes on my lovely, finished drywall. They're returning in the morning to 2nd coat everything. That's all I did. I have to put in a toe kick heater, move the cable outlets, and actually install my the cabinets (vs. just stacking them). Then, shy of trim, I have one room finished. In my whole house. I can actually put things in the cabinets and get them off the counters and floors. I cannot imagine a clean, flat surface! Wow. To bed, I think, and tomorrow is another day! I got the garage and window/door trim on my little ranch-style home scraped, primed, and repainted, as well as the deck! Did I mention that I hate painting outside? The garage also got completely insulated and sheathed with OSB; it isn't painted and looks a little rough, but keeps the space 10 degrees warmer than it used to before insulating! Oh, and l painted two small houses--interior painting this time!--for a friend who has rentals. No more painting for me for a little while, but l still have plenty of projects to do: redoing my raised garden beds in the back yard, finishing the laundry room(original basement concrete walls only on two sides), and figuring out how to make my kitchen work and feel larger without building on! I have lots of ideas and wish l had the money to go with them!

You gave me a great idea to install a cabinet all the way down to the granite on the right. As I am staring at my kitchen back wall, the longer length of backsplash tile on the right didn't help with symmetry. May ditch the open shelving and return back to your suggestion of even uppers flanking the windows. Now I can return to sleeping at night. Thanks Sophie for your great suggestion.
