Comments (22)Dark Witch looks interesting. That clump of Double River Wye looks good in front of the Shasta daisy. Ideally, daylilies should be grown amidst other perennials, as Bennett did in his garden. Dance Again is one I haven't noticed before. Desire of Nations is an important hybridizing plant, but has been disappointing as a garden plant. Slow growth and late spring freezes are probably responsible for recent subpar bloom. Dream Sequence, vigorous and showy Dankie --limited bud count, but a softly alluring shade Darker Shade--darker and more purplish, but a difficult shade to capture Duel Zone --a nice bitone, though plant habit is not ideal Drums Along the Mohawk Dennis Russell --a nice plant, though not the quality of Glowing Quasar Dixieland Band has been a consistent and colorful later bloomer in recent years. Deep Dark Secret was nice this past year. The cream pink watermark of Dr. McGregor's Garden is very appealing. Dark Gethsemane --we shall see Drew Hoo looks very promising Dragon Nation is vigorous, used a lot by Mary Baker in hybridizing. Dirty Bastard Not my best picture of Daniel Howard Norris, but the best from this past year....See MoreM daylilies 2022
Comments (22)Debra, Mayan Warrior is a semi-evergreen tetraploid that blooms midseason. It has rebloomed for us. It's on the short side at 24 inches, but the 6 inch flowers are above the foliage. It has an average of 4 way branching and 20 buds but we have seen it as high as 30 buds. Its parentage is Pumpkin Prince X Gavin Petit. Muy Caliente! is named for Bob's fondness for Mexican food. At our favorite Mexican restaurant, we are always warned that the plates are 'caliente'. That is what inspired the name. It is taller at 36 inches with 3 branches and 16 buds. We have seen as many as 23 buds. While the bud count is not high, it produces many scapes. When we divided our clump, we pulled 23 scapes (I don't think I got them all). It also reblooms. It is mid late with 5 or 5.5 inch flowers (I can't remember). It is also a tet and is dormant. Its parentage is Apache War Dance X Sea of Cinders. Nancy...See MoreBest Budded Daylilies of 2022
Comments (15)Sherry - I was looking at this thread again and noticed your comment about daylilies with fewer scapes having more buds. This is something I've really noticed since I've been hybridizing. My seedlings tend to have more buds the first two-three years they bloom. Once they grow into large clumps, the bud counts go down. I think that's a good reason to divide large clumps into smaller divisions. Debra...See MoreOrange Daylilies of 2022
Comments (30)Santorini Sunset looks like a bright one. Muy Calliente looks very interesting. Oranges are probably the least popular color after yellow on auctions. People don't appreciate how vivid and varied they can be. This is the only pic I took of Bob Marley this year. It did not like the heat against that off-white wall. Spirit Fox looked good, though other oranges can be more vivid. Carrick Wildon is always a later bright one. Alabama Jubilee had a great year. So many oldies showed why they are classics. Krakatoa Lava Stop the Car--not a sizable clump yet, but certainly warrants a pause in one's gaze. Tahiti Sweetie --commands attention with height Mardi Gras Indian --very vivid Tropical Fruit Loops --I like this color. A sib of Mardi Gras Indian Heavenly Dragon Fire --a unique glowing color. Crintonic Fireball --excellent color. Too new to evaluate habit Indian Ripple --great display this year Holiday Party --showy in garden if you like doubles Lana Ishee --the older evergreen that Chris liked (and must have given me). It blooms reliably in a searing color Vitamin C --a good landscaper. The color itself is a bit dull close-up, but makes a bright spot. I have grown to like it. Made a long display. It looks best in sun, which we had a lot of last summer. Solar Fire --an older Webster, very large, plain but showy Heman Mean Green Tropical Fusion --very showy in the garden, even if the plant habit is not ideal. Nan showed this one for a few years....See Moresherrygirl zone5 N il
