I've seen it done before, but if you don't make the perfect tile choice, you run the risk of having it look like bathroom tile in your kitchen. What is your counter material? Could you use that as the backsplash too? Do you have plans, photos of your materials.etc? Hard to suggest anything without seeing something!

Joan: Chipping remains a neary insurmountable problem with the printed porcelains as opposed to the through-bodies. To continue the pattern, the top must be mitered to build up an edge. The more rounded the edge, the less likely the chipping, but the more you round, the worst the edge looks because you're removing the print. When you do get a chip, it's very difficult to repair inconspicuously, especially compared to other surfaces. Cracking is primarily due to fabricator/installer error. Do it the way Roberto Colonetti says and you'll be fine; he wrote the book.

Consumer Reports can be depended on for reviewing lawn mowers, and snow and leaf blowers, cars, and washing machines/dryers. Anything having to do with kitchens, however, not so much. CR is usually behind the times, when it comes to current counter materials, and appliances. Took them several years before Sub Zero fridges and Wolf products were included in their reviews, despite their popularity. Same thing happened with soapstone. I’d been reading discussions about soapstone, and seeing posted pics of soapstone kitchens, 6 years before CR included it in their countertop reviews. As a 50 year subscriber to CR, I stopped relying on their kitchen reviews long ago. And, yes, as @joseph_corlett said, some of their testing methods for kitchen products are suspect.
