What do you like best about your new kitchen?
Comments (26)As Divamum noted- I am amazed at the change in quality of life for our whole family. We went from tiny horrible nasty 1920's kitchen (fridge blocked a doorway, no counter space, stove blocked doorway, no vent....) to a marvelous kitchen that has the perfect feel. We captured 1920's charm with modern convenience. The space is so functional now- so much counterspace that it doesn't matter if there's a mess, there's still plenty of room. There's better lighting, more room all over. Not to mention a Wolf range that is amazing and a nice new fridge (Thermador freedom). Nothing hides in the back, nothing freezes in the fridge. We have this marvelous invention that is called a "dishwasher". My whole adult life I'VE been the dishwasher... On top of the function, there is beautiful soapstone that goes without oiling for months, and a beautiful floor of checkered marmoleum. Most of all, the function and space have now set me free to cook with my kids and throw dinners together after a long day out at work. We did tons of holiday baking and used cookie cutters for the first time (never had a clean enough, roomy enough kitchen to take that sort of time and care). The sheer space and pleasantness make the kitchen a focus for lots of living and entertainment. I'll also note the little desk we worked in to the side corner allows my husband or I to work late, but still be with family, and/or allows my daughter to do crafts galore. I knew I was yearning for a new kitchen, but I never thought it could make this kind of difference....See MoreSMALL kitchen change orders that mount up-tell of your experience
Comments (6)We are DIYers for the most part and I am the GC for our projects. I tend to do things a bit backwards from other people. I make a punch list and buy and pay for all the little odds and ends before we start the project. I already know what the major components of the project will cost. So I buy all the light fixtures, dimmers, and switches, the sinks and faucets along along with drains and valve assemblies, the towel bars etc. ahead. Areas of my house look a bit warehouse like LOL but I save a lot of money this way. It helps that I am not fickle about my purchases and not easily swayed by other people's tastes what is trendy. We do source out electrical, major plumbing and things like extensive sheet rock and framing but I have worked with them long enough to get get their input before my projects. As an example, the next stage of our (pre) house remodel will be to get the service panel upgraded by our licensed electrician. At the same time wiring will be dropped in areas of future needs I already know about. We do our own install of fixtures so all we need is the power brought into the areas....See Moreplease share your experience with Rubio Monocoat in the kitchen
Comments (55)We have been nothing but pleased with our Rubio coated floors. I am building a bedroom suite and seriously thinking about finishing it with Rubio when I came across this thread; and was a bit surprised by all the negative comments. I am neither a contractor nor a flooring professional, but finished the floors myself and found it was relatively simple and straightforward. Our floors have been in for over 5 years and look as good as the day they were finished. The floors are Owens Plankfloor engineered white oak (select and better rift and quarter sawn), which I highly recommend. We really liked the color of the natural white oak and did many blends of samples to try and keep the color as close to natural as we could. We finally went with ½ natural and ½ 5% white. We are doing a whole house remodel and not knowing exactly what we were going to do in the kitchen but tired of walking on concrete, we laid the rest of the house and left the kitchen floor unfinished. The kitchen was finished and subsequent flooring laid approximately a year ago (4 years after the original floor). Additionally we took out a fireplace and hearth in a living room and weaved in new flooring approximately 3 years after the original floor. In both cases the new flooring was coated with Rubio and blended perfectly. Had these floors been finished traditionally, it would have been very difficult to match finishes. The attached picture shows the transition from old to new (basically from the refrigerator back into the kitchen. We mop with Rubio Soap once a month or so and realize we may have to recoat at some point, but really like the matte finish. We don’t have children in the house but do have a small dog and 2 2-year old grandkids. <>YF...See MoreBest-rated panel-ready dishwasher (or your experiences)?
Comments (6)We installed a panel ready Miele a few months ago. We did go with their top of the line integrated Diamond model. Very happy with the performance. I got rid of an 8 year old Miele when I remodeled and we never had a service call on that machine and no broken parts. I did notice a bit of loss in performance over the years, which was due to our hard water and I didn't know I needed to use the Salt additive and I used gel detergent. This time around I am using the Salt and the tab detergent to keep things running better. I also bought some Miele descaling cleaner and plan to use that regularly too. The only reason I switched to a new Miele was because I wanted the integrated/paneled look for all appliances in the new kitchen....See MoreRelated Professionals
