Comments (3)The oleander is the variety they sell at WalMart on clearance when it has a touch of scale and is potbund. I realized today that technically I protected the oleander because I sprayed it with Wilt-Pruf late last month. I'd like to hit it again before it turns cold again. I killed a gloriosa last year with no protection or special siting. It was buried under snow and ice for upwards of 3 months. This one hasn't had snow on it for more than a day because all of the snow on the ground is melted around it. We only had 7" of snow in December, it will be gone tomorrow, but it's been consistently cold, 10 straight and then 12 straight days below freezing with a monthly low of 8. Could've been worse....See MoreA [Near] White Daylily Garden - Year 2

Comments (19)I couldn't have a normal veggie garden this summer due to house renovations, but I still had a volunteer sungold give a few tasty sweet tomatoes on the mid peninsula. Our passion fruit vine took over about 80 feet of our yard. It is really evasive, so it clearly didn't miss the heat. Lots of fruit on our persimmon... it seems normal for this time of year. Also our lamb hass tree and rocoto pepper tree really took off. There is one area where there are passion fruits, peppers, and persimmons all intertwined. I love the cool summers. Coming from Atlanta originally, they are wonderful. My ideal outdoor temperature is 66, and I hate tropical weather... this summer was perfect for me even if it makes some things harder to grow. I hope last summer was just a freak occurrence. We decided at the last minute to add AC to our renovation just in case it wasn't....See MoreDoorknobs rusting in less than 2 years, near ocean.
Comments (15)Amanda, where are you located? Not all ocean front is the same! We rented an ocean front house in Santa Monica, CA for a month and it is not the same climate as being ocean front in Florida or NJ. The overall humidity is much lower in CA and we get very little rain, so there is a lot less damage to property. I used to live in the northeast, so I'm always amazed at how long things last here in CA. You see few rusted cars. Exterior paint jobs seem to last for ever. I just had my wood stained garage doors touched up after 7 years of eastern sun exposure. They would have needed work after 2 years if I lived anywhere else....See Morestanofh 10a Hayward,Ca S.F. bay area
