Exterior Paint Design Dilemma

Oversized Transom Window Ideas

We are updating the exterior for a new house we just bought. The entire neighborhood seems to have the black shutters so we are going to try and slightly have some color. Here what I’m guessing so far, a charcoal gray architectural roof, a metal roof on the bay window (maybe charcoal gray too?), SW Alabaster trim, SW Intellectual Gray siding. But I’m stuck on the door! Would you stain the entire transom area a dark cherry or different color? Would you paint the window and the door the same color including the brick in between to make it seem like one big continuous door? Here is the house and a couple pics from the internet that seemed cool. Help!

I think you are saying you will paint the brick? I will say right now that is the fasteset way to devalue the house so no paint for the brick IMO. I would remove the shutters do the siding in this color add a lot more color in the landscaping and do all the trimin the same green

I was thinking of only painting the brick between the front door and the transom window to make it seem connected but it was a random thought!

I leave mine alone. I can't imagine having to dust or clean anything up there and I like the looks of it left alone. Some people will put a drapery like you are, leaving the transom alone, but if sun is an issue, you could try to use a cellular shade or mini-blind made to fit. We had sun issues (in AZ) so I have sun screens on all my windows for a uniform look and heat reduction. Otherwise, sometimes a really nice and large, stained glass hanging up there for a neat alternative and more pricey is to put stained glass up there instead of the window (the rectangular one).

I believe that if a wall is more than 10 feet high it must be framed with 2x6 studs instead of 2x4 studs, so that would require rebuilding the supporting wall(s). As far as how difficult it is to raise and rebuild the roof itself, its really hard to provide any opinion without seeing a picture of the current setup. Bruce

Narrow is the operative word. It is also a hall from the stairs to the living room or Kitchen? I think the chandelier is where it has to stay. A seating area could be done in the space to the front of the room. Maybe use some great captains chairs until you are entertaining then just pull them up? A side board for serving dishes/formal service would be very useful. I agree a table that can be expanded to fill the space would be fabulous for entertaining. The only item in the previous owner's home I don't care for is that bench by the window. It looks like an old iron bed. I think you can do better.

I would do the door and the door sidelights, and the transom in the same color. No paint on the brick, there is no reason to make them look connected, they are not part of the door and will never look like part of the door. I think the gray on the siding on those bays would look nice. I also like the look of shutters on your house, so would probably paint them, but, leave them.
