My Granger poster arrives today! An art story (long) …
When I was a child, my dad would take me to a fish and chips place in our city, Arlington, Texas. It was the mid-1970s, and the place was decorated in a very casual, naturally hippy style. Artsy textiles and prints, sprawling plants everywhere, macrame, great rock and folk music playing. I loved it. And I really loved the fried eggplant. Anyway …
There was an art print on the wall that my dad and I were mesmerized by. We’d always study it, wondering what in the world it represented. It certainly wasn’t like our decor at home, but we loved it, and over the years would sit at the table nearest it, like visiting an old friend.
Eventually that location closed, but the original in Fort Worth stayed open. I kind of forgot it was there and rarely went. When I did, I wondered what happened to the strange Granger poster.
Fast forward … my DH moves here from LI, and as we drove by Zeke’s one day, I said hey, you need to try this place. We go in.
Still old decor. Still same menu. You order at the counter as soon as you step in the door.
We go on through to the dining section, and …. no way. The Granger poster is on the wall!! I nearly cheered out loud, and told DH why I was so excited. He agreed it was very interesting and compelling. The tradition started again — go to Zeke’s, enjoy lunch, visit the Granger.
Well, last time we went, it was gone. No one knew where it went. The founder is still running the place, but wasn’t there. Maybe he took it home, or sold it, or something?
I decided one day to look it up, just to try to save a picture so I wouldn’t forget it. I discovered not many images of it exist. But then …
I see one for sale on Ebay! I bid, it’s rejected. Bid again, rejected. Bid one more time — MINE.
And it gets here today! I called my dad and he was so excited. He said he loved watching me looking at it as a kid, and how we’d muse about it.
If you made it this far, thanks for reading. Here it is. I’m certain it’s not anything like you’re expecting, and more certain nobody will like it. I understand totally. But I’m so giddy! :D

Comments (33)Paul: I'm glad you took a look at the pictures and gave some leads on what else these worms can be. I'm not entirely convinced that they are bloodworms, but I don't doubt that it's possible they are not E. fetida. If it helps, under a 60x hand lens, they are transparent except for a single red blood vessel running down the body line, and there are no visible protrusions, bristles, feet, jaws, or anything that looked different than a very small EF worm. The fish farm where I got my tillapia sells dry fish food, from powders on up to kibble, but they don't sell live food. I don't suspect that they feed their fish bloodworms with the wholesale dry stuff on hand. My system has had significant contact with soil and vermicompost though. Could these be some form of terrestrial worms that are not the EF's I deliberately put in there? If you look at the 'coosh balls' picture, you can see 2 ( I think ) small red creatures that look like tiny centipedes with poorly developed legs. Although those things worry me, I don't think they are the same creatures. The can that I took that first picture in went under aeration shortly after the picture was taken. I'll check in on it tomorrow to see what's going on. cb2: What happens if you put a drop of soap in the AVCT? Up until now, I was under the impression that it was a commonly accepted wetting agent in all sorts of garden and farm applications. Comments (26)I ordered 2 Mondrian prints, each was supposed to be framed in a Metropolitan frame. One came in the correct frame and the other didn't, even though the packing slip said it was. Short version is, I had to provide a picture of the print in the wrong frame and tell them whether I wanted a replacement or refund. I chose a replacement since they were to be a grouping (and the red trim in the frame complemented the colors in the prints so well), and then got an email saying that they were out of stock on "certain components of the item" and couldn't guarantee shipment for another week, and to let them know whether I wanted to wait or cancel. I chose to wait. We'll see what happens next. My advice is, if you're ordering multiple items, don't assume they'll all be what you want, or that you'll get a replacement very soon when they aren't....See MoreDR Mantle Artwork
Comments (151)Of course, the issue here isn't print vs. original. The issue is one of the image itself... Of course it's fabulous and beautiful and that's why it's been reproduced over so many years in so many ways. I think the comparison is with the Mona Lisa or even the Statue of Liberty. Both beautiful images, both are extremely recognizable and have been loved by many for many years. No question about anyone owning the original, so it's a matter of reproduction and in what medium. Having a picture of the statue of liberty hanging in your house is one thing. Andy Warhol morphed the iconic image and having it hang in a room is another. So would be a statue of liberty snow globe. And of course it isn't a question of whether she could hang it or not...she can hang anything she dang well pleases. And it's not a question of anyone looking down on you as you're fabulous and have done fabulous things with a fabulous house. The question is really one of will it get you where you want to go with the room...if it will enhance or diminish your vision of the room, what you want it to say and what feelings you want it to evoke in the people who occupy it. I know you like the unusual and unexpected, and all the "maine" pics in themselves become expected and iconic and I can understand you not wanting to go there. I also understand how an iconic image can become the unexpected...because it is so iconic, no one will use it in a formal setting, so you will. So I guess I'm changing my mind. If you like it, if the family likes it, it's not expensive and can always be replaced when and if you find something you like better. For me, I'd turn it into a craft project...take the poster, cut it up into squares and mount it on blocks of various heights to make it more textural so it keeps the image, the colors, the theme, but makes it more unique and less kitsch. Comments (43)I hardly had any wall space left but I managed to buy a 1946 calender and find a space big enough to hang it. It has notations on it about setting eggs; hen, goose and duck. I added the pepper plaster plaques because I found them locally in my price range. Not my first choice but shipping from eBay gets out of hand. After MUCH discussion I decided against any type of backsplash and left it painted white so I use "old" prints and things as my backsplash. Two of the framed pictures on the SW counter were found in my machine shed. One is dated 1933 and I presume the other is likely in that same time frame. The calendar on the NW counter is from a grocery store no longer operating in my home town. Everything is either framed or laminated on its way to a frame. I like to change things every so often so this works for me. I have lots of pictures I've aquired over time.
