Living room design help

HELP! We're stuck on how to furnish our living room. It's part of the main living area that is all open (kitchen, dining, living). We have kids and dogs and it's the heart of the home, so we need it to be functional and look nice.

Here's where it's at with the current hand-me-down furniture that has gotta go.

What's staying:

Flooring: CoreTec Phoenix Oak LVP

Walls: BM Revere Pewter

Kitchen (adjacent): BM Hale Navy and Simply White with white/grey quartz

What we like:

Lots of seating for the whole family (sectional? couch and two recliners?)

We have a transitional, eclectic design style...we like modern farmhouse and mid-century modern looks.

Dimensions:

The space is approx. 13ft (tv wall) x 11ft (with some wiggle room on the side near the dining room and hallway) x 13ft.

Ideas?

Nice fresh finishes :) What are the double doors for behind the couch? How many in the family?

Thanks - we're trying; getting there bit by bit.

The doors behind the couch are to the screened in porch...the left one is a door and the right is stationary/window. There's another set of doors to the porch on the dining room side so we don't currently use that one, but we could if we can find a furniture arrangement that allows for it.

There are 4 of us plus 2 medium sized dogs.

I can see your dilemma first. What a beautiful room! Seems to be more of a seating area than a family room, correct? And yes, unfortunately, the size of the furniture is too big for that space. Let's fix that! Put the rug back, lol. The size you had seems appropriate. Without it, it looks like your furniture is floating, or the movers just plopped it down. Furniture placement needs rugs to help delineate the space. You Should only need the front of the legs( of all furniture touching the carpet). Try layering a more modern/ or your style of rug on top of it, and this will give you some inspiration for your style and the rest of the decor you want to put into making it less formal- which I think is what you're saying. Move the piano in front of the windows; it is a beautiful piece and needs a focal point, not tucked away on a wall. Add one more picture below it, use one of the chairs on one side(maybe the side closer to fireplace- add a floor lamp and a small table. Add some greenery next to the piano/ closer to the entrance- something tall- you will have to play with this since I don’t have a floor plan and the size of your furniture. The other chair has to go from your grouping. Sorry. You can also try moving it to where the piano was with another bit of table. You need to free up some room. Too many big pieces, all pushed together. Add window treatments to the window- something off-white and make sure they kiss the floor. I would almost paint your casing black (only those two where the piano will hopefully go). This would tie back into the piano and make it much more architectural. Add a more modern mirror to your fireplace Here is some inspiration, don’t mind my sharpie drawing. Adding more accessories like / throws/ pillows/vases that are more your style will make it look less formal. Right now, it’s giving me some library vibes. I think this rug could work well for you, with your Coastal vibe - plus the tile. This rug has some light blues in the color - but the design of the rug comes across as a neutral, overall - and is very versatile. Doesn’t lock you into any particular color scheme. And it is casual, yet has a certain understated elegance, I think. You can dress it up or dress it down. If sofa can’t be reconfigured, then let’s tweak…remove the ladder, pull the sectional away from the window so the back of it aligns with vertical plane of the window cornice. Center the Klimt 6” above the sectional on that end wall. Place the tree to the right of the sectional but centered in the space between the sectional and the wall. Cat toys could go behind sectional. A fabric storage basket next to the tree could hold the extra throws. Move the framed baby footprints to the baby’s room. Move the plant that’s to the left of the fireplace to the right side and move the bromeliad plant to the left of the fireplace. Keep the two hex shelves in the same positions, relative to each other, but move them down so that the top of the green portion of the left most shelf aligns with the frame at the bottom of the tv. Paint the entry wall the same color as the rest of the room. Move the bird cage onto the cabinet with a couple hardback books placed underneath it and the coffee table plant placed inside it, if possible, with the other plant grouped with them. Group the other 3 items on the right side of the console cabinet. Then move the plant on the bottom shelf to the coffee table. A basket of baby gear or toys could go on the bottom shelf of the cabinet. Fill all 3 cubbies with storage baskets.

MCM pictures for inspiration? I am more of a traditionalist, so it was interesting to look at MCM on Houzz. I found quite a few examples and think maybe you are putting the cart before the horse so to speak! Select your rug first any foremost, and do it in person so you can see the actual colors and size. The size of the rug should allow for all the furniture to sit on the rug, or just the front legs of all the furniture pieces....find THE rug, then select furniture, paint, accessories from there....but the rug seems to be the first thing chosen for MCM aesthetics. 1. Rug similar to one suggested in comment above; right on! 2. Three colors in area with subtle rug.....aqua, lime yellow, all alligned on the color wheel....any three colors in a row could work. 3. The rug with solid colors of furniture in green blue grey all next to each other on color wheel. Rug is amazing. Or this could be a broadloom carpet cut and bound to fit? 4. Rug is it! 5. Rug is great! Furniture lay out stunning too. Using colors opposite each other on color wheel for max impact. 6. Monochromatic; easy to select and work with.....black and white are your neutrals and frame the space. 7. Again the rug, with simple furnishing and lots of white frame. You are going to have a lot of fun with this!

How about the TV on the wall the tall black bookshelf is on? Can we see that wall?

Your space is small and furniture is large. What does the wall at the stairs look like? Could the TV go there? If so, turn the sectional so it is along the long windowless wall and in front of the window. That would allow use of the door to screened porch, and 'welcome' people to sit on the sectional. The current placement of the sectional just makes the space look even smaller by boxing it in.

The dining table according to your sketch (42" x 90"?) is also HUGE for the space you have. A 60" or 72" maximum would be better.

Yeah, the current sectional was not intended for the space, it’s gotta go.

The current dining table is expandable…the largest we could do in the space is 90” when expanded for gatherings, not daily. Also, the table is up for replacement eventually. Living room seating is the first priority.

I like the idea of putting the tv where the bookshelf is but that’s far from the living room space and we’d have to rewire. Possible but more complicated.

Would you do a smaller sectional or couch and chairs? We’d love to maximize seating without overcrowding the space. 🤔

Here are a couple of layouts that a furniture store drew up for us as ideas. I’m concerned it’ll feel too crowded. What do you think?

Not a pro.

The room feels closed off. I think there are 2 things to try.

1) Rotate your sectional 90 degrees so the backs are along the walls and see how that feels.

2) Put the TV on the door wall and put your furniture on the longer wall, which may make the space feel bigger.
