Big changes: sell the furniture and get some couches and perhaps swivel chairs with less of a footprint. However, they do look comfy and seem to go with the rest of your house. Smaller changes: lose the drapes, let go of the artificial flowers and the little things on the mantel, larger rug in a neutral. Consider "lighter" looking end tables, perhaps glass instead of wood, even like some circular glass tables or "C" tables. Maybe try the artwork that is over your couch over the mantel instead. I would frame it, if possible. I am with you, I love my living room and use it every day for reading (and getting away from the TV). It's nice to have a room for socializing.

What are you willing to spend and which furniture are you willing to get rid of?

Is it adjoining the dining room?

What are the measurements of the living room?

What is that room on the other side of the wall cut-outs, and what are its measurements?

How many people do you need seating for?

Is that a real working fireplace that gives off flames? Do you ever use it?

Did you choose the furniture in this room?

Do you also entertain in a den? What does it look like?

Can you post in this thread photos of living rooms that you love that you want to live in right now, don't worry about the cost and the size of the rooms, just so we can get an idea of your tastes right now?

I would replace old fashioned drapes with wider panel ones with no ties up.

Is your fireplace real or can it be moved? Can we see a better photo of that window up above? Hard to tell what you're working with there.

All the wood trimmed furniture should be sold. It's not classic. See before and after images below to illustrate a room that has been updated.

Move the larger painting into the bedroom. It's not subject matter for public rooms.

You need a larger rug and don't look at brown anything for this room.

Take down the drapery. You don't need them in this room. If the light is a problem then get a motorized shade to control the light.

Your instincts that the room feels old are spot on. Get rid of everything in that room — everything -- and spend some time finding photos of rooms you like. Then share what you like here along with room dimensions for advice on next steps and pulling a new room together.

Your home is very beautiful. Do you have any inspiration photos of rooms that express what you're trying to achieve? Unlike others, I don't necessarily think all the furniture has to go, or all the artwork. For me, the issue is the monochromative theme. I like beige, but it's very beige. I actually have 2 chairs, a little less heavy on the wood, but they are in fact classic. But I don't pair them with other fussy furnishings or drapes or lampshades. I think you could do something similar. Pare down, but not necessarily start over :) I'd suggest you pick out some photos of things you like, that express both comfort, coziness... what you want to evoke in the people who come to visit you in this room. For me, I see you sitting and enjoying tea or coffee, or perhaps wine or mixed drinks, with a few friends. Chatting and enjoying yourselves. But I don't know you or what you see in your head that you want this room to be. I know how I would change it if it was me :)

You said you want to "reconfigure" the furniture, not get rid of it. I think emptying the room of all the accessories, pillows, rug, lamps, art and drapes will give you a fresh look at the space. If the FP is electric, consider moving it to the longer wall; even better, take it to the master bedroom. Once things are cleared out, use furniture sliders to try some new configurations of the seating.

Two possible furniture rearranging, assuming the fireplace is electric and moveable: 1) Move the fireplace to the long, full-height wall. You could then move one sofa to the window wall, to form an L-shape grouping. Leave one chair next to the relocated fireplace, angled as it is currently. Relocate the second chair, or 2) Relocate the fireplace elsewhere in your home. As in 1), move sofas to form an L-shape, and use both of your chairs on the long wall.

The price to fully reupholster that furniture would be as much as to buy new furniture. The curved backs of the chairs are pretty, so you could reupholster just the backs in a vibrant fabric, and repeat that fabric or another on the sofa throw cushions.

It looks like the window may be a large and round - it might be nice to introduce a rounded glass coffee table.

Currently the room feels too static with two matching sofas, two matching chairs, two matching side tables, and two matching lamps -- all arranged symmetrically in the room. The double height ceiling, with apparently just one high window, makes for a bit of a vault-like feeling. A large chandelier or pendant light fixture would make a huge difference.

Echoing what mimimomy said, the room is overwhelmingly beige.

I see you too are a lover of the 'Bombay' curve in furniture! Sorry but I have to agree your livingroom needs furniture with a smaller footprint. I just re-saw Sarah R talk about that--look at the footage your armrests take up. You could gain four feet of space just by going with a straight arm! Beverly's room sort of gives you an idea but it is lost because there is TOO MANY pieces in it in the end. The window, why is it curtained at all? No one can see in, my guess is it's a full or semi circle..it was designed with the idea it would stand alone, unadorned. If sun control is an issue....bummer.

I like your furniture, and it can definitely work. The lamps, drapes, fireplace, etc. are fine, too. And I also like your art (but that is not up to me to like or dislike, because art is a very personal thing, and really not up for discussion). But I do like your art; and I actually think the large piece over the sofa is stunning.

I agree with @mimimomy that the main issue is the predominance of beige in the space. Beige is a great neutral, and sets a nice foundation. Beige is also ‘back’, trend-wise. But with the style of your furnishings, and overall space, bringing in a bit more color and/or contrast could work - to give you a more updated look.

You mention that you are thinking about bringing in a new rug - and that would be a great and easy way to bring in color and/or contrast, plus visual interest. Also, if possible, I would suggest removing all of the throw pillows from the 2 sofas (or sofa, loveseat) and just use one large lumbar pillow on the sofa that is under the large art, and just a couple of pillows on the sofa that is across from it. And no beige pillows on sofas, if possible.

I put together a few visuals for you. In these visuals, I used a brown leather lumbar on one sofa. I like the texture (although as a vegan, I would most likely use faux leather :) and there is lots of that available; so whichever you prefer, if you went with this style.)

Alternatively, I think a large velvet lumbar pillow in a deep plum/eggplant shade might be nice for that sofa.

Whatever color you go with, try using just one large lumbar pillow there.

Also, I picked up on the light blue in your art for pillow(s) for other sofa. And I like the idea of a light blue in velvet.

So these are just a few rug ideas/views. I personally love the first one, and I would totally go for the drama with the animal print - but there are many ways you can go; these are just a few. If you are interested in any of these rugs, let me know and I can give you links.

Lose the drapes, add color, change the art.

I absolutely love the painting above the sofa, but IMHO it dwarfs the sofa. I think I would like that painting hung on a narrower wall where it would dominate the space without competition. Maybe the wall opposite the fireplace? Keep all art that is not over a piece of furniture centered at 57-60 inches above the floor. (eye level). Anything over furniture about 6-10 inches above the top of the furniture.

Get a new piece of art with similar colors for over the sofa that is 66%-75% of the width of the sofa that is wider than it is tall. With you décor I would choose a framed piece for this location.

To add color you can re-upholster or paint walls, replace carpet add décor items or all of the above.

Look at some picture of Colonial Williamsburg or other historic interiors. They used a lot of color on walls and in fabrics. You have a modern home and neutral color palette with the old fashioned furniture. The furniture isn't light and bright and the modern neutral/white color palette there isn't anything giving the space life, except for the one lonely piece of art.

Based on your inspopix, I think you should stick with your furniture, but try to brighten the room in other ways. Think "Old World" with a twist. Start with a new rug, chandelier. and a mirror to double the chandy. You can stick with ornate and dark, but brighten with some brass and an accent color like powder blue in the summer and teal for the winter. I think you could do a big tapestry to cover the window up top, and add more lighting at seating level. Mediterranean, Spanish and Tuscan come to mind if you want to research those a bit.

@decoenthusiaste thank you! I looked up “Old World” living rooms and was in heaven! That’s my style! I love the tapestry and chandelier in pic #1 and I kinda really like the mix of colors in the space too.

@mimimony and @freedomplace1 thank you both for your gentleness! I plan to keep my furniture and artwork but agree I need to pare down and break up the beige. I plan to remove the pillows and add lumbar ones after I pick out a rug. I like powder blue, teal, green, orange. I like the boldness of rug#1 freedomplace1 but I’m not sure I can pull it off. Something like rug# 4 feels safer. Can you send me the links please?

The large photo is nice, but looks a little contemporary for the space, I would consider framing it and placing it on the mantle in lieu of the smaller one, as long as it doesn't cover the bottom of the window.  Otherwise, i might find a new location for it and find a picture or mirror that fills that space.  The photo on the fireplace seems more cohesive with the style of the room, if you could find two more, frame them similar, maybe with different mattes, and hang all the along that wall where the large one is.  I would keep the furniture but change the throw pillows and add a larger rug with more more color but nothing bright.  Something in these tones.   Beautiful style, good luck!

When purchasing rugs online, it’s good to order the smallest size first to check for color, texture and to get an idea of how the rug might work in your actual space, with your furniture, lighting, etc. That way if it doesn’t work, and/or you just don’t like it, you don’t have to deal with sending back a huge rug.

USING everything you currently have, I would suggest making space between the fireplace and the sofas and place the high back chairs near the fireplace. The real game changer, I believe, would be if you move your large piece of art over the fireplace. Remove everything currently on your mantle & remove the drapes. Your re-designed focal wall may just bring a new breath of fresh air that you are craving.

Paint the walls, add a rug with blue camel cream tones, pillows with same tones get rid of curtain and do a blind.

Too many pieces and they’re all the same. I would break up the set. Keep the two chairs and get a nice chesterfield sofa, for instance. It’s all the matchy pieces. When you have different pieces that compliment instead of match, they look more classic and less contrived. Simplifying the lines and adding color will also calm the look. Pair the chairs against one wall with a new small round table between, and place the sofa on the other. (If you prefer the sofa, then reverse this advice and keep one and get two new chairs. Maybe some pretty velvet wing chairs)

PS, Wow, you’re really getting a lot of really bad, confusing advice in this thread 😬. They mean well, but that particular room is too small and needs less, not more.

@Juanita, I’m curious as to why you’re not using that room as a dining room. I suspect that’s what it was meant to be. You’ve got two living rooms right next to each other. My house has a formal dining room we’ve never used because the space in the eating area of the kitchen was actually bigger, so it was just an empty room for years. We finally did some work on the house and I decided to change mine into a sitting room as well, but mine has some separation to the main living room. Your rooms just made me wonder.
