Two week old St Augustine Sod yellowing leaf tips
Comments (2)Sorry to disagree with you weed. That is fungal disease. How long did your grass sit on the pallet before you put it down. St Aug is very prone to disease when it does not get good air circulation. Here is a picture of iron chlorosis in otherwise healthy St Aug... Only the grass in the very center of the photo is affected and only barely affected. I happened to catch it right before the entire lawn turned yellow. I have a much better picture of St Aug chlorosis but on a different computer. Your instinct to spray with a fungicide was correct. I would not have used a spray because I have excellent experience using ordinary corn meal on St Augustine. If the spray does not work, you can still use corn meal but you will have to use a little compost first. Corn meal is a biological solution and your spray has upset the natural biology of the soil. Compost will restore that biology and then you can use corn meal. Yes, this is the corn meal you eat. As a comment on your previous die-offs: the first one was not due to a major freeze. I don't know what it was, but if St Aug survives almost every winter in Dallas, it is much more likely to survive absolutely EVERY winter in Florida. Second one was chinch bugs...or was it lack of water and mowing too low? Established St Aug must be watered at least monthly to remain alive. It needs to be watered weekly during the heat of summer to thrive. If you have sandy soil yours might need it more frequently. And most St Aug should be mowed at your mower's highest setting. Mow too low and you need to use more water...and you get weeds....See MoreBermuda Sod-2 weeks in-tips?
Comments (4)You could really do yourself a favor if you take soil samples and submit them to a lab for testing through your county extension agent. Take the samples first, then apply the fertilizer. I hope you are not planning to apply that entire bag to that amount of area at one time. If that is a 50 lb. bag, you would be applying almost 4 lbs. N/1000 sq.ft., which would certainly be highly excessive on your new sod. It should take you 3 seperate applications, 30 days apart, to use up that bag, if it is a 50 lb. bag. That would be more than enough N for the rest of this season in NC on new bermuda sod. After the first fertilizer application, you will receive your soil test results which will give you an indication of what is needed, or in excess, in your soil. That test result will guide you as to how to proceed with nutrient applications. After Labor Day, you will want to focus more on root growth and development for "hardening off" your bermuda for survival during the winter season. Comments (9)ditnc - yes, I have always overplanted maters because I never really get good crops. But it was kinda getting outta hand. This year may be my 'turn around' year. Yes, a single hole in the PCs. I would stack up 5-6 cups and use a 3/8" drill bit through the middle of the bottoms. I used to use little 4" plastic flower pots but I'm convinced that the deeper 16oz party cups allowed for much better root development. This year I used the PCs not only for the maters, but all my vegetable and flower seedlings too. The more substantial root mass has reduced transplant shock to zero this season. Comments (24)I bargain with myself a lot. I give myself permission to take the dogs for a half length walk, ride the exercise bike slowly, empty one single box. I can't get started if I make the planned task too large, but most of the time, once I get started on the small task, I can keep going. The other thing I do is make the task as pleasant as possible so I surf the internet while I ride the exercise bike, listen to audiobooks while I pull weeds, play a movie while I unpack boxes. Then I just keep adjusting my goals. We just moved the last pile of stuff from the old garage yesterday. I've unpacked my clothes, "our" stuff in the bathroom, kitchen, and LR and DH has unpacked some of his stuff (I packed it since I was already retired, but if he wants it out of the boxes, it's his problem). Today I'm assembling the book shelves and tomorrow I'm hoping to unpack my books -- a few at a time! I did throw away a few packed boxes left from our 2005 move, but as I emptied one into the dumpster out tumbled my grandmother's Joy of Cooking. Whoops! I rescued that but refused to look at the rest. I also motivate myself by trying to empty the boxes so that I can get them listed on Craigslist. People are really, really grateful for a big pile of free moving boxes....See Moreraee_gw zone 5b-6a Ohio
