That is an excellent idea! I would like somethings outside my back windows and I could use some of my plants in pots. Good idea!

Several years ago I bought a kumquat for just that. A few days later my family overrode me and got a regular cut tree so it went outside (and was immediately happier). It floated around my yard in a pot for a few years and finally got planted. Tough little tree.

Yes, I always decorate my little Norfolk pine as the Christmas tree. Will post a pic later.

I always decorate my two big kumquats with lights where they sit. The big one even gets christmas ornaments some years. This year my little sageretia is all decked out in mini christmas tree ornaments I found at a local target, though I'm still looking for a light strand small enough. I've been trying to get the family to get behind rolling the big one into another corner and using it as our christmas tree, but still haven't succeeded. Although I did get them behind letting me pot up and grow a pine tree variety for that purpose once we move and have a yard. Going to do my research over the next few years and figure out what variety I want.

Not yet. Can't get it past my wife.

I like Norfolk Islands, have a mini collection of Araucaria in fact (A. bidwillii (a.k.a., bunya bunya) and A. araucana (Monkey Puzzle). You realize these get BIG. Your Monstera is gorgeous, btw. Here is a pic I took this AM of the Monkey Puzzle after the first snow this year, a dusting.

The monkey puzzles seems to be enjoying the snow. I have seen the norfolks as big trees in the ground in the tropics but I doubt this one will have such an opportunity. I got it in a 2 inch from Trader Joes 3/4 years back. It won't be reaching my nine foot ceiling in the next ten years I think. I did have to behead my rubber plant recently when it was ready for breaking through the roof.

Back in Delhi we actually call these Christmas trees -these are the only ones Delhi's arid hot climate would allow.

we used to have small glass ornaments for our norfolk pine .. a little tinsel ... lights were too heavy back then .. and too hot ... maybe some tinsel.. since we didnt have cats ...

nothing says Christmas.. like a cat with tinsel hanging out its butt ...

We decided to get a little potted spruce instead of a cut tree this year ... it will be going back to the porch in a couple days until we're ready to take its lights off and drop it into the hole that we dug for it.

(Those are origami birds for ornaments.)

We were also unwilling to buy a wreath or swag for like $35-$50, so we made our own swag from branches that came off of one of our pines, some twine, and some decorations we had in a box from previous years ...

some of the plants forced for xmas gifts are severely pot bound ... and in the absolute wrong type of media for trees .... usually too much peat .. leading to watering issues if they get overwatered ...

i would put it pot and all on the north side of my house.. and lay it on its side so water doesnt accumulate ... and then in spring.. i would bare root it in dormancy.. and properly plant it in the ground ...

btw:.. im glad you know its not a houseplant and does need to go outside for winter.. the usual is.. we get post in feb.. march.. saying my pine tree is dying ... lol ... and we start by saying.. its not a pine.. and then its not a houseplant.. and it was sold as disposable.. blah.. blah.. blah ... etc ad nauseum ...

This tree was purchased from a local nursery (not a big box or grocery store). They alsosell Christmas trees that they grow on property across the street from their location. I don't know if they grew this one themselves or ordered it like their regular trees and shrubs.

Nope, not a house plant ... it came in yesterday and will go back out after this weekend (we might plug it in occasionally in the porch through early January or whenever it goes out to its hole). It'll be going in its hole pot and all. It's designated spot is a protected location near our shed on the north edge of a wooded area. It'll be relocated in spring.

Nope, not a pine tree or a houseplant ... it's a spruce tree.
