Stairs, from carpet to wood. Help?!

I’m installing vinyl plank flooring throughout the house, except the stairs. I want the stairs be real wood, which I will either paint or stain. (Last photo is floor sample). I will also paint or stain the bannister, and add a rail on the wall. My question is this: the existing stair treads under the carpet are very sturdy solid 2X12s, unfinished, of course, with rough edges on sides. The front overhang is a fairly smooth rounded edge. I’m inclined to leave the 2x12s in place, sand them smooth-ish, and use some kind of trim to finish the edges where they meet the riser. It’s an imperfect lake house, so I’m thinking the nail holes will just blend in and lend to the overall “character”. What are your thoughts?
