Bay window living room furniture placement
We move into our new house in January and I need help with furniture placement in the formal combo living/dining room.
The dining table will go closest to the door opening to family room/kitchen.
I have a nice chesterfield sofa and will add chairs and tables as I go but first I have to decide where to put the sofa. In front of the bay window looking in? On the big wall facing stairs or floating mid room facing window?
I do plan to paint a slightly warmer off white and loose the cool blue walls.

Comments (2)Just browsing and can't resist. It sounds really nice, P Swiss, as do Annie's ideas. My initial thought was that the sideboard (assuming no hutch) could be used as the base for the TV. It's pretty commonly done now and would allow some simplification. Regarding placing furniture for the view, every time you walk or glance into the living room, you'll be able to enjoy it. Perhaps including a seat or two near the windows specifically intended for enjoying it close up would do? This would allow you to arrange the rest of the furniture to optimize the room's other functions. Have you thought of having your dining there? Do you need 4 seats daily, or would a drop-leaf table that seats 2 when dropped do? Comments (3)Here is how I would arrange it. Not having dimension, this is obviously not to scale, but gives you general idea. I'd use round features when possible to eliminate the look of the angled wall. Example: here I used a round rug and chairs. I don't know how much space is in the bay window area or if you need to place a dining table there. But, if so, this is one option of how to fit a dining table in smaller space: scoot it up to the back of the sofa. I also do not have information on what furniture you have, but I would not use 2 sofas as the current owner is showing. I'd use one sofa and a couple of chairs, as show below. Hope that helps. Comments (9)From your description, a full three feet in front of the box bay will be required for your traffic pattern. That means the bay should not be considered a part of the living room and subtracts 3' from its length. The size of your bay will totally determine what can go there. You might do a window seat or just a collection of plants if it's small. It would have to pretty deep to hold chairs and a table. 2 years agolast modified: 2 years agoTerri, yes, to sofa in the bay window area. Give it, a coffee table and two accent chairs its own rug to define the area. Console behind with lamps and window treatment will make this a great "living room".
Moving to the back of the room, add your dining table, placed right in the middle of the room.Armoire, next to opening into kitchen, and a round table to break up the rectangular feel of the room. Horse is not necessary:
The fan...if you don't need it, have your electrician move the power to hang a chandelier over dining table. I chose this photo because it shows what I suggest...no rug on this end of the room. It will muck up a visual walkway into the family room.Terri Clark

2 years agoWill there be a TV in the space? If so we might recommend placing the sofa facing the big blank wall. If not then we might suggest placing the sofa facing the bay window and adding chairs in the bay window area.
