Opinions on the dining room rug.

Hi all!

I would love some advice on the rug in the picture below. Is it too much? Does it clash with the stairs? Should I do something less intricate for this area? The rug in the office is directly opposite from the dining room. As you enter the home you have the office to the right and the dining room to the left stairs to the side of the entryway.

Thank you! Can’t do much about the stairs right now. Maybe in a few years!

If I take away the decor, I see baseline traditional; the stairway, the wainscoting, the fireplace, the trim, and the windows.

I like the black wall paint, the Chesterfield sofa and all the rugs.

But, the floors ( a luxury vinyl plank?) and the black stair treads, black runner seem off in the scheme.

I'm not at all a formal person, but I do have an eye for balance - and your room is very well-balanced*. I'd not move any furniture or the mirror. I love your prints and it took some searching to come up with the execution I wanted to suggest. Frame a large part of the wall and hang the prints within that frame. You might even paint that section of wall a different color. * With one exception: the chandelier. However, I can't tell if it's the perspective of your photograph or the actual size of the 'chandy'. Did you take the photo from the stairs? If it really is that big, I would change it out for something less heavy and much shorter. As for the rug, I would not get seagrass; I'd get a formal rug with wide stripes or blocks of color to balance all the curves in the room. And in pastel to medium shades to reflect the light ceiling color. (Don't change that, either!) Very, very pretty room. Here is a link that might be useful: Frames within a frame

I think it's so hard to tell based on the different lighting in the pics and different cameras used. I think the coffee mug looks like a bright, almost fluorescent green and really pops against the muted wall color. But the rug looks like a muted golden green. But that may not be the case and seeing it in the room is really the only way to know for sure. I'd check the return policy and if you are ok with the policy and think the rug has a good chance of working, go for it! Things look so different once they are actually in a room. I bet your wall color looks different IRL than it does in this picture.

Not sure this product is available everywhere, but here is some general info on limewash. It will provide a very matte finish, unlike most faux finishing techniques, and is perfect for walls that are not perfect. Applied with a large brush. This is how walls used to be painted. Provides a visual texture to the wall without actually changing the surface of the wall Try googling it for videos so you can see how it is applied and locate a supplier in your region. You might find it at the local independent retailer that carries Benjamin Moore. 'Interno Lime Wash is a unique lime based coating which is designed for interior use, and replicates the soft weathered patina of a traditional lime wash. Its unique formulation allows the lime to gently 'bloom" through the paint, creating soft tone variations which add depth, texture and that Mediterranean look without the necessity of exposure to the elements." Glad you like it! It's the Bridgette Printed rug from Pottery Barn and is made from wool and jute - so a nice natural fiber mix. I may be mistaken, but I thought Pottery Barn once offered samples. Take a look. Bridgette Printed Rug

I really like your style, lovely home. :)

I think the rug works, but that one with much deeper colors would look even better. A Persian or Oriental with dark blues, reds, etc.

The walls look navy on my monitor, is that right?

Just as an example:

I think the darker colors tie in better with everything.

Then buy that gorgeous rug and, in a few years, do something with the stairs.

@jinx thank you for the input. I think you right. It is a pretty pricy item so I want to get it right. I love the inspiration photo it looks beautiful. Yes the walls are a navy grasscloth.

i agree with Jinx. Another idea is to get a neutral rug (maybe a natural fiber rug). If you do that then you won't be having to fight with so many colors.

You have a gorgeous home. I love your dining room. It is elegant and maybe a muted rug would help in keeping in that elegant style.

Mari Rojas I think that rug is perfect ! I think it contrasts beautifully with the walls and flooring. I like that it stands out and gets your attention. aktillery9's rug is beautiful, but too dark for the room, IMO. Your rug also meshes nicely with the office rug.
