Things to avoid in your compost: grease, meat, pine, citrus, pet
Comments (38)Hmm, well, there is that Chinese drywall problem. I was always curious what actually caused that. It does not seem particularly harmful - at least on the sulfur side. According to that Wiki article, Chinese drywall gives off sulfur containing gases as a result of a particular bacteria attacking the unusually high levels of pyrite in the formula. Pyrite is nothing but iron sulfide, quite harmless. In an aerobic composting environment, I suspect that particular bacteria would decrease as others compete. Also, any gases that are produced will waft away outdoors. In fact, those bacteria probably already exist in most soils and compost. I did notice that the Chinese drywall also had more fly ash in it than American drywall. I do have some concerns about metals in fly ash, especially any fly ash from China. I would think this problem has been cleared up so any new drywall isn't going to have these problems anyway. But I would probably not put Chinese drywall, new or old, in my compost. As for fiberglass, it's first I've heard of that. There can't be much in there since you don't see it, and it's not a toxic risk. It's tiny glass fibers, which are made from silica and other harmless minerals, and would disappear into the soil. Of course it's up to everyone to make their own choices. I just try to clarify the facts....See MoreFancy Salts - what to buy, how to use
Comments (13)The salt blocks are gorgeous dcarch. I'd be tempted to cook on them but they loose that lovely pink color, or so i have heard. I was gifted some various salts and some rocks. I did need to get a grinder as some are just too large for finishing salts. Spice grinder works. The Himalayan rocks are so dense! I've tried different graters but just get a dusting, though that is fine. I recently prefer the Maldon. It pulverizes to a crunchy dust between your fingers. Flaky and seems to melt when used. I've not tried the smoked Maldon. Mabel- Nice to use your local salt. I tried making my own last summer. After 3 days i was close. I had braised an exotic meat that i had resting just above the salt tank. Could not stop tasting the meat and dropped a piece into the salt. Oops. I'll try again next year using a better method, maybe exterior evaporation. Here is a link that might be useful: Maldon sea salt...See MoreHow do you wrap meat for freezing?
Comments (24)Me too on the vacuum sealer. Every year, I get a quarter or half a steer in the spring and a hog in the fall. Miscellaneous poultry and fish goes in the freezer, too. I've been using Food Saver sealer and bags for about 20 years, now. (First one died about 5 years ago and the second one is still going strong.) With wetter items (say, marinaded stuff like mimipadv mentioned or freshly cut fish), I will often wrap the first with stretch-tite to keep the moisture out of he machine. I do use butcher paper for my larger (home cured) hams simply because they are too big to go in the FoodSaver bags that I have. So far, those have all done well for up to seven months (never had enough hams to need longer than that.)...See MoreNeed meat and cheese gift....
Comments (10)I went through this last week. What a time su*k it was. I've ordered from iGourmet, SuperMarketItaly, and Eataly. Just during the initial lock-down. iGourmet twice. They are all fine but doubt i will order again. Expensive with shipping. Eataly i used an old gift card. My BIL and his wife will be visiting family in SC this week from Portland. MIL and SIL live together. Nephew and his wife with young child live within walking distance. BIL loves to cook so wanted to sent something. Last year i sent them a big box of wild caught salmon to share. Easy and pretty perfect with a newborn and not yet vax*d. iGourmet does have some gift selections with free shiping but not specific to Keto. Though gift baskets always seem be overpriced. A good selection a-la-cart. 25$ shipping for perishables. We did not care at the time since we could not get anything delivered, not even a curbside timeslot. Long lines, no masking. A hundred dollar budget would allow 2 or 3 cheeses and some salami type charcuterie. Then i had a semi-brilliant idea to send them a big selection via WholeFoods. Treats they would not normaly purchase. (they don't need a bow). : ) So, duh, i did what i sent my parents when my sister and her husband visited Thanksgiving and my brother and his family a month earlier...(we have been taking turns visiting) Misfits. Selections i know they will like. A big box of veg and another box of sweet and savory treats. A double of gulf shrimp and a double of halibut. Delivered monday. My BIL will have at least two meals to plan and enjoy making. They all have the sweet tooth gene. We don't care for panettone type stuff but my MIL will love it. Just a few of the things i selected. My SIL is not much of a cook but BIL will know what to do with fennel, celerac, watermelon and purple radish, golden beets, bok choy, etc. The other option i gave up on is searching their location for locally delivered gift baskets. I'm sure Miami has similar....See Morel pinkmountain
