Favorite Gift for a Gardener
Comments (17)This year for Christmas I'm giving friends pots of spring bulbs that I potted up in early October and are now chilling in my garage. Together with care instructions, so they'll know how to shepherd the bulbs through the rest of the forcing process and end up (I hope!) with a bit of springtime in February.........I'm also giving one special gardening friend a yellow clivia that I purchased online a month or so ago from the American Clivia Society---she's been coveting a yellow for at least a couple of years. Solid bird-seed balls and wreaths are nice, too. I order a few every year from Gardeners Supply. Garden- or nature-themed Christmas ornaments are another idea. Last week while visiting Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden in Richmond (VA), I nabbed about a dozen terrific ornaments--including a tomato, a squirrel, even a slug! As for what *I* would love to receive as gifts, I lean toward the practical----tools, gloves, hand soaps and balms, gift certificates to my favorite nurseries, books. But a real 'treat' would be the promise of a day trip in the spring or early summer to someplace like Tower Hill or Longwood Gardens. Or the Philadelphia Flower Show!......Ha, ha, just thinking of Longwood makes me want to get in the car and drive the four hours north from Virginia to see it decorated for Christmas! (I did it last year as an early Christmas treat for myself---it was well worth all eight hours behind the wheel!)...See MoreOkay what was your favorite gift??
Comments (45)My favorite gift was one I gave. I have as many others connected with old school friends who I have not seen for many years on FB. I became friends with a sister of one of my old beaus and who I have not seen for at least 40 years. I learned a lot about her through posts and also that she has ovarian cancer. She had been chemo free for a year when she learned she will again need chemo. She loves old fashioned teas with the pretty cups, English blue birds, and many other things. I wanted to find a pretty tea cup with birds on it. I found some blue ones with blue birds, but every web site was out of them. I finally found a single vintage cup and saucer on ebay and bought that and sent it on to her with a card, but only a friend, no name. She posted about how she loved it and then posted again when she received the two poinsettias I had sent to her, one white and one red which were sprinkled with glitter and she said it might be angel dust. I was so happy to see that she was so happy and touched that someone would send her these gifts. She now knows I sent the tea cup, but did not ask about the Poinsettias so I did not disclose that. This made my Christmas. Adding a pic of the tea cup. Sorry it is blurry...It was a small pic on ebay. This post was edited by hellion on Thu, Jan 2, 14 at 7:31...See MoreFavorite Hostess Gift
Comments (18)Funkyart, I think you could say that about almost anything, not just soaps. People bring us wine; we usually pass it along to neighbors because we so seldom drink it. A neighbor brought us a lovely bottle of port. I have no idea when we would ever open port, neither of us likes it. Someone recently brought me very nice local jams. My kids are weird and don't eat jam. I have it maybe once a month? Probably less Not sure what I'm going to do with those. All very nice gifts though! My general plan in choosing hostess gifts is a consumable so that the person never has to worry about using it or displaying it in front of me, something that does not need to be served at the event I am attending, something that does not require immediate attention, and something "nice." By nice, I mean it feels a bit posh and is attractively packaged. Soaps tick all those boxes (though I also do olive oil and vinegar and other more personal choices at times). If the hostess doesn't like guest soaps, I figure they are easily donated or passed along to someone else (or used in a bathroom the hostess doesn't use)....See MoreFavorite food gift baskets?
Comments (77)I had to order a sympathy gift basket but forgot all about this thread, unfortunately. I used Harry & David, after a few people told me it was reliable. Oh my word they are pests! I get at least 2 emails every single day. I will unsubscribe once I'm sure the basket was received and I don't need to contact them for any problems. And I expect to be inundated with catalogs. I'll use catalog choice to opt out once I have the first catalog and the mailing label. Pestering me is not the way to entice me to become a return customer....See MoreSueb20
