Is your TV mounted above a fireplace?
Comments (48)Some fireplaces are deserving of being called a monstrosity. Our old one certainly was. Bellsmom on the kitchen forum enhanced the monster so you can see it better: I begrudged it taking nearly 4' of depth for most of the width of the room to support its tiny firebox. We considered putting the TV over the fireplace in the remodel, but we wanted wood burning and the low emissions fireplaces are all quite tall. Also, I didn't feel it would be comfortable for me that high and the hood might block some of the viewing area from the kitchen. Post remodel we have a tamed fireplace, definitely not a monstrosity: The new fireplace takes just a small bit at one side of the wall leaving the center to our - horror of horrors! - 60" flat screen TV. We like the size because it makes it easier to read the screen when using it as an internet browser. The large size is also very nice when viewing from the kitchen which is over 20' from the screen: The new fireplace is an EPA Phase II wood burning fireplace. It runs efficiently and produces minimal particulates. Convection air flow around the firebox heats the room nicely and the intake air control allows control of how quickly the fuel burns. We live in an area with cool winters - enough that the additional warmth in the evening is nice since we usually keep our thermostats low. It heats the family room and kitchen nicely and the room is still comfy in the morning. Because it is EPA phase II, it's legal to use on most "No Burn" days. So far we haven't had to buy wood. Our yard and tree trimmers of neighbor's trees have supplied enough....See MoreRemove some brick, lower mantle for TV mount
Comments (6)You will need to check with the manufacture of gas fireplace for the clearance they require. Removing the brick is not a problem, but maintaining clearance is essential. Check the manufacture and local code and go from there. A chimney sweep or mason who deals with a lot of fireplaces might be able to answer the questions also....See More65” or 75” TV above fireplace
Comments (14)I've had my tv over my fireplace for over 5 years and absolutely love it there. Nothing like having a nice fire while binging on Netflix. For your space, I'd go with the bigger tv. There's room for it without the space looking crowded. One thing, consider installing a fireplace mantle below tv. A mantle will protect your tv from the heat of the fireplace. You don't need a deep mantle depending on the setup of your tv and wall bracket. A tv exposed to that kind of heat will not last....See MoreGas fireplace mantel height with TV mounted above
Comments (17)I think if we had a wider fireplace insert it would make a big difference overall. That is something I stated was a misstep already. Our TV is recessed in alcove. The mantel and surrounding materials are approved for fireplace. It’s true there was significant work needed to have this meet code. I actually can’t imagine the mantel any higher as it is already at my chest height when I am near it. It really is so personal. The only thing I would shift is our fireplace insert size....See MoreJ G
