Raising second floor master bathroom 19"?

Looking at a house in which the master bathroom is a full 19" below the bedroom. The bathroom includes a large closet as well. Here are the particulars:

1) The bedroom ceiling height is 105"

2) The bathroom ceiling is at the same level, so the current bathroom height is 124"

3) Bathroom would have two sinks, shower, wc, and tub...

Although, this height creates a great space, those three short steps seem like a nighttime disaster.

Assuming the whole bathroom (1988) needs gutting, can the floor be raised by putting in perpendicular floor joists (2x16?) ? Besides cost and loss of those high depths, are there any downsides ?

Thanks in advance.
