I often walk through my garden. Reflecting on plants. Especially plants I have gotten from friends. They hold such special meaning. I have quite a few from Virginia, she's not here no more and I miss her so. I have a few from Paul , some from Kim, Belmont, helped me get a good amount of my European loves, I thank him so much! I even have a few from Connie. I also have some from John, and Jim. I love that I have so many friends in the garden. I think of everyone of you, when I am tending a plant that you have so kindly shared with me. I feel I may be missing someone, and I apologize if I am. I know I had more trades, but atm I cannot think of them, so sorry! I hope everyone else has friends in the garden.❤

Alana - I thought about it, and I do exactly the same thing, especially with my roses! Jeri, Kim, and several others on here have contributed to my garden, as well of course as my DH's father and both of his grandparents, and both of his great grandparents. Each plant has a history and brings those people back into the garden. That is why I am determined to keep their plants alive while our water utility is determined (they have said this in writing at great length) to force everyone in our county to rip everything out of their gardens, and install "desert plantings" - they use those in the true desert climate of Las Vegas as a perfect example - I am not making this up!

mariannese, what color do the leaves of Therese Bugnet turn in Sweden? I believe in the USA that rugosa hybrid's leaves often turn a nice orange color. If I'm not mistaken Paul Barden has often used Therese Bugnet in his breeding efforts, although I don't know that he has used it specifically to create roses with wonderful fall color. Can you grow Acer rubrum in your yard? The tree is native to the USA, and so it's possible that in Europe it may become an invasive alien plant species. (I don't know if it does, but I recognize that it might be possible.) In New England Acer rubrum, which we call is a magnificent native tree for red autumn foliage! (Do please also note that Red Maples can get much larger than this picture suggests.)

Glenda, Sounds similar to ours. Doesn't seem like it will ever end. But if they don't change the forecast again as it gets closer we will have possible 30's for lows Wed and Thur nights and then highs in the 90's starting around the 18th. Our plants had better hit the ground running. And we are getting real dry again. The wind on the tight ground is starting to hurt. Some has already suffered some permanent damage. Hoping we can get some this week. We will be getting the wind again this week. This spring has went like they did 2-4 years previous. Last year warmed up by the end of April and we had short period for things to grow and mature before the heat hit. Did the pea seed germinate and come up or not? The only reason I ask is I have trouble with the black birds and now the ornery squirrel nipping off and removing some of my early plants. Most of the time they don't eat them. Just watch them hit the ground and go on to another one. I had almost 100% on my pea seed. They haven't grown very fast. Afraid the heat will shut them down before I have a chance to get any. And I planted fairly early. May try to sneak them in earlier and cover with a row cover next year. Will have to make decisions about whether to start planting tomatoes today or not. Think some will start going it with buckets around them. Then will cover up on the cool nights. Hoping everyone gets the moisture they need. Jay

I too have been so grateful for the wonderful rosarians sharing roses. Paul Barden and Claire being standouts.

It is so wonderful! I do have a few other plants from Virginia besides Rose's, but it's just having that connection. I also have a few of my dh gramma's Rose's, and one from my dad, that was his great grands. Sheila, I have one from Claire too! I missed her in my original post and I have three from Kelly, and I have some from trades with Tony , who pops on in threads every now and again, just to do trades. I remember them more, when I am in the garden with them :)

I'm sorry @jacqueline9CA. Thats so frustrating. It sounds ill informed on their part. Do they realize that ripping out established plants and putting in new plants would still require quite a water demand? New plants, even if they are desert plants, come from nurseries where they are watered quite a bit. New plants would need to be watered regularly for at least a year if not a few years to get established. Your heritage roses are likely well adapted to your climate since they've been in your garden for generations. Desert landscaping doesn't mean zero watering and yet so many people think it does. Under drought conditions even native junipers need watering or they'll die.
