Exterior Color Advice Help Needed - Mid Century Modern
Comments (4)Awww I hope you keep the blue gazing ball - every garden benefits I think from at least one whimsical or kitschy piece! I like the red of the brick - it looks like a true brick red at least on my monitor. You might try scraping some paint on the siding to see what the original color was - just FYI, not that you want to use the same color. I was looking at these in the paint store other day - & thought there was something sweetly vintage and evocative of the 50s about them- maybe one of the beigy ones would tie red brick and stoney taupe together a little better: https://www.ppgvoiceofcolor.com/collections/frank-lloyd-wright/1955-taliesin-color-palette Actually what is that stoney looking piece - is it real? Is repeated elsewhere on the house? What color is the roof? If its blue (kinda looks like it?) and not changing then that would have to be considered somehow - whether that means changing/colorwashing the taupey stone parts to get it more harmonious wtih blue-gray, I dunno....See Morehelp! how to modernize mid century exterior
Comments (7)I agree with removing all those hedges and the shrub on the left of the garage. Just add some colorful perennials and ornamental grasses under the picture window. Blue Fescue is always nice as it usually retains year round color. I'd paint the siding a color to match the brick then use a warm gray on the fascia, column and garage. Colorful front door, new modern lights, and new house numbers on the column or to the right of the door. I don't think you can paint your vinyl window frame without causing warping (not sure if I just made that up) so I left that and the door trim white. If you're able to put money into the walkway I'd widen it and maybe modernize it....See MoreHelp! Exterior paint, trying for mid-century modern
Comments (12)Thank you! That is a great idea about the grey - I think minimizing the white would really help. The landscaping idea is also very clever. I was playing with the house facade last night, and was trying to figure out if anything else could be done with the entry area to brighten it up with an accent color. Now I see your comments about perhaps not doing an accent color may be better. The original house at the back was built in the 1960s and has beautiful wood vaulted ceilings, so the interior has a lot of potential. A very 90s addition was put on the front of the house, with these semi-circle windows and tile roof - so we are trying our best to tie these varying styles together. I appreciate your help! I will check out the links you provided, thank you, Shannon...See MoreMid Century Modern White Exterior
Comments (23)The last thing I consider especially for exteriors is which direction the front door/windows faces. Because the light is constantly changing throughout the day and the year - it's a point of criteria that literally changes by the second. I understand your attraction to the cleaner whites in terms of chips and samples. What you need to try to anticipate is what happens to white on a bigger scale and in sunlight. Just because the house faces north, doesn't mean it's on the dark side of the moon. Sunlight - from all directions - strips chromaticity or colorfulness. So that "clean" white that looks good on samples and chips ends up looking rather arctic. Simply White is a really good suggestion because it has a little bit of chroma/colorfulness and there's a chance it will "wash out" and look just right once installed. As a general rule, you can always go a little darker and a little more colorful on exteriors than you think you can because, again, sunlight will knock back the intensity....See MorePatricia Colwell Consulting
