Lighting Kitchens Design Dilemma

Lightbox over uncentered island

If I were to remove this lightbox,
1) How difficult would that be?
2) What sort of lighting would be recommended since my island is not centered?
3) Can a decent DIYer get this done or should I hire a professional (electrician?)?

That fluorescent fixture is probably held up with two screws, you can have it down between cups of coffee. I would skip pendants and just put 4” cans evenly placed in the ceiling- probably 9 on dimmers.

Take it down and see what you got - nothing to lose. I would not go with can lights, A pair of pendants would look great. Especially since you can center them!

My kitchen is 13'x20', and there are 7 pages of photos linked. The photos go from original to new kitchen. If you'd like any of the KD's plans, let me know. I'll scan them and add them to the photo album. One end has the working end of the kitchen, the other has the dining area. There is an 8' archway into the family room on the dining end (it used to be a 6' sliding door to the outside patio), and a 45" square window over the sink that is now just an opening into the family room - used to be a glass window overlooking a very messy patio! Ok, I have narrowed down my tile choices to a Mexican Travertine or a Porcelain tile with a natural stone "look". Would appreciate input from everyone regarding which tile you think would be a better match for my granite and cabinets. I am leaning toward the Travertine but it is much more expensive and I suppose a little more maintenance involved with the sealing every year. I have never had natural stone tile before so any advice or tips on the pros and cons of Stone vs Porcelain would be appreciated also. :) Oh... and the sample tiles are 4x4s but I will be using 6x6 tiles. I would do either a single statement light that is elongated and has a multitude of clear glass balls/bells/etc, so that it fades into the back ground. Or (and this is what I would do) you could still just do two pendants and make them really stand out so that they are the focus and not the stove. Your stove hood looks to be plain and blending in with everything (unless something is changing?) so I think you could get away with it. Hi everyone. There is no seating at the island. The issue really is that the doors make the placement of the light fixture seem more off center than it really is. Hard to show that in my photos bc I can’t get the whole room in one picture. If there were no doors there, I don’t think people would notice. I put the table centered under current placement of light fixture and put chairs around it. On the left it’s about 40-41 inches away from the island and it seems a little tight. I guess I also have to center the table in front of the doors, and then see how close it is to the island. If it’s too close I may have to change to high hats or a high fixture as someone suggested. I have 3 teenagers so my kitchen is always busy. I edited my post here. **its not so much the space for the chairs, its the ability to walk behind the chairs on the island side of the table***

IMO pot lights will need to be done no matter what and unless you have done electrical well get an electrician It will not be that expensive. Make sure you use LED bulbs in 4000k the change will be amazing. I think next thing on the list would be trying to improve storage so that you actually have counter space .

We had a similar light fixture (the dreaded cloud light!) when we first bought our house. We took it down and replaced it with a more attractive light fixture (and have since replaced that with can lights). There should be a normal junction box under your light that will accept a new fixture; it’s a quick and easy swap out either DIY if you’re comfortable, or an electrician if you’re not.

Let the new owners deal with that. They're likely to get rid of the island and cabinets as well as put in all new lighting. Price it right to move into your new home and do upgrades there.

NO pendants. 4-5 recessed lights. the space already feels crowded. and the ceilings are not that tall this room needs light not more decor.

Otherwise a simple track style fixture in satin nickle.

Have you done DIY electrical work before? If not, at least do a lot of research before doing anything. Keep in mind that if the location of the existing junction box doesn't work for whatever replacement fixture you go with, you will have to move it and then patch the hole that is left. But an electrician won't patch a hole, either, so you'll be stuck with that regardless.
