I vote for floating, click, wood look, luxury vinyl plank. I especially like the style with knots and chatter marks. Lay it throughout the whole house, on the diagonal, with no thresh holds. That's what I did. I can clean the entire house in approximately five minutes with an electric leaf blower. Porcelain tile is more durable however it is more expensive to buy, more expensive to install, and more expensive to uninstall. Also, some tile is extremely slippery when wet whereas wood grain LVP is not slippery at all. Five years later I am happier than ever I chose grey driftwood luxury vinyl plank for a house with dogs, kids, beach sand, and lots of wet feet. If the house gets inundated from storm surge and ocean water gets inside, I can unclick the LVP, clean and dry the subfloor, and then reinstall the same LVP and it will look as good as new.

With lots of expensive prepwork, and undercutting all the casings and doors, and losing height of the baseboards, yes, you can halfass the project and lay plastic over tile. It won’t be any cheaper than doing the project correctly and removing the tile. It’s likely to be more expensive, actually.

Squares that you can diy. We have some commercial grade carpet near an entry (garage) ...works well. Vinyl squares can be diy.....I wouldn't hesitate to do sturdy commercial carpet squares all the way thru into small galley kitchen. Can replace easily at future time ...i would look for something you can diy and a square or section Or the like can be replaced. Or when you just want to you can change the whole floor when child grows . the key is small galley can be diy and don't hesitate to think it need not be a forever floor. Hardwood is always great but sounds like you are not wanting that.

Luxury vinyl tile that comes in planks can mimic stone or porcelain tile as well as wood. That would look better than having something that looks like wood, but isn't wood, next to real wood. You could have it laid in a herringbone pattern which would contrast nicely with the wood flooring. One of my friends did this when they remodeled their kitchen recently. I assume you're interested in LVT because it's softer than real tile. As the poster above says, many people now have real wood in their kitchens. However, we moved into a house recently that has wood floors in the kitchen and I don't like it. I never feel like I can get it as clean as tile because you have to clean it gently so you don't damage the surface. We did put LVT in the finished basement and I like it there. If I were remodeling my current kitchen I would go back to ceramic/porcelain tile. But some people think that is too hard. I don't do elaborate meal prep, so I am never standing on the surface for long periods of time so that never bothered me. Go to a good flooring store that has lots of options if there is one in your area and take some time to think about what you really want and will look good with the rest of the kitchen.
