Remodeling Design Dilemma Kitchens

Plain white countertop instead of veined pattern

I am planning a very contemporary kitchen with high gloss white cabinets, gray mosaic glass backsplash and white countertops. It's been proposed that I use countertops of quartz with gray veining, but I really don't care for that look. Is it really so terrible to keep it simple with patterning just in the backsplash? Thanks.

You need a comprehensive design plan, and budget plan. A successful kitchen will live within those limits. It can't absorb 5 different budget busters, nor can it deal with 5 different ''must have because I'm in love'' elements. There are a lot of right choices for the different elements that neither bust the budget nor shout ''I'm the star''. Learn how to put together your kitchen with those, with your superstars then carefully selected to fit into those surroundings. That may or may not mean choosing a counter that you love, since you state that the range and venting were your ''must haves''. You can't have it all. Decide what are the musts, within the overall context. Not as each element as an individual. That is T-R-O-U-B-L-E. Remember that none of these pretty things will ever love you back. Some can perform better, and that is always worth considering as an ''upgrade'', but not if it blows the budget, or skews the other choices. For instance, a 14K refrigerator shouldn't even be on the table if that choice makes you consider skimping in another area, like not choosing a pro to correctly install your floors, or you decide to skip adding lighting. "Splurges'' should NEVER mean that another element gets shorted to below a reasonable standard.

I think design is changing faster than it ever has and it's hard to keep up with it. Just because I bought something only a few years ago doesn't mean that it's not already dated. My house was built in 1999 and the finishes that were used caught the tail end of the 90s trends so it was already dated when it was built. When we remodeled our guest bath four years ago, we bought Giallo Ornamamental Light granite for the small vanity because it was the only cream-colored remnant we could find and we had guests coming. Shortly afterwards, someone here referred to speckled granites as "dog vomit granite". I thought to myself "Yep, that's my GO." I can try to convince myself that it's a popular granite but the truth is, it's not used much anymore. I wish I'd had more choices at the time but I did not. I just took a peek at Cambria and they call their speckled quartz the Classic collection and they have not added new colors since I looked at kitchen countertops six years ago.

for the handles, may I suggest something to pick up on the hues in the flooring? A little more copper toned. you have light cabs, light floors. I think throwing in a dark ORB w/o actual copper highlights would be too much of a contrast. IMO. cypress park Sandra, I like the porcelain one better than the other one. Does the backsplash have to be done immediately? If the tones in the porcelain tile you picked clash w/the ivory tones in the counter, it could be a problem. However, I did find some copper toned ones that should be avail. these are porcelain/SS, and treated so as not to stain or tarnish. I LOVE these for your kitchen. timeless and gorgeous. They are probably not super cheap, but it would be worth it for me. http://www.miusartmosaics.com/arabesque-lantern-beacon-copper-tile-in these would also work. the site is here: maybe they have them in stock.http://www.westsidetile.com/arabesque-tiles/ i like this one too. notice the copper faucet. beautiful w/the glass mosaic. if you got the cream countertop, this would look amazing w/your floors. this last one is a copper colored slate/quartzite.

Mitering a 45 in a corner is a very weak seam in stone, and one that shows every potential shift of the cabinets as they settle. Most fabricators will refuse to do that, and if they do, they will want a written waiver. This is a case where you pick a single direction for the grain pattern, and live with the cross grain pattern on the shortest run. As in, Run the pattern lengthwise on the island, sink, and range run, and cross wise on the fridge run, sine it is the short leg of the L. Or, put a different material on the fridge run, like butcherblock. Or a different, non directional material on the perimeter than the island.

Get what you want -- a solid white countertop is just fine.

If you like and want the white counters, it doesn't matter what anyone else proposes. Your kitchen, your choices.

I put in Glacier White Corian last year. I'm very happy with it.

I’d do Glacier White Corian with a square or pencil round edge for a contemporary look.

Plain white quartz or Corian would be more appropriate for a modern kitchen. The veining in quartz almost always looks fake and overdesigned.

Am putting Glacier White in mine. Love clean look. Cloe white tile on the wall and natural cherry cabinets.

Most kitchens of any period look similar.

I am going for what I want, trendy or not. I am hoping for timeless look.

Stick to your solid white choice! I love the look of white countetops too, and used white quartz for my bathroom vanity in my bathroom / laundry room. Solid white is timeless!
