Looks fine to me -- sort of Navaho.

Are you open to layering a smaller rug over it? if you cover the center section, you'll eliminate most of the Navajo effect. Type "layer rug" into the Houzz search engine for several articles.

Bigger coffee table and need actual seating for relaxing not dining chairs

@Moore4 You’re totally right. We are working with hand-me-down furniture at the moment. Loathe the brown of all the wood. Will take your advice on moving the pillows and going solid.

I would not layer over the rug, you will be hiding the gorgeous colors and design. Maybe you need to move the rug into another room and start over with a more single-toned one in this room.

@Moore4 I’ve been toying with moving this rug to the bedroom. Might be the right move.

Not Native American at all, I think it looks like a Kazak. The graphic pattern works well with clean lined furniture.

That rug goes with anything. It's the coffee table that brings out what you see as "folky". Put a modern clear coffee table over it. Here's an acrylic waterfall table.

@P Banos Yes, it is a Kazak rug. Its really nice, bought it locally from a great store. loved it in the shop, still love it, just need to do it justice! The reference images are helpful. I agree with a different coffee table, replace the striped pillows with ones that pull the blues from the rug.

Well the good thing is the rug will be around when you have replaced all your furniture. They can last a lifetime. I'd replace the ticking pillows first, then the chairs, and then coffee table.

You also have the traditional pieces such as your side chairs, and I agree that another coffee table could help to bridge the gap and could possibly give you more of the look you are going for. Plus different throw pillows, picking up on color(s) from the rug perhaps; a couple of velvets could be nice. All of your current furniture can potentially work with the rug. It’s a nice eclectic mix.

Rug is fine. Your furniture need to be replaced. If you can not get inexpensive armchairs now, then just move out stools. I would also replace and coffee table.

The rug is not the issue if you want modern that is not pillow ticking fabric for pillows that are also BTW too big I see 2 really traditonal dining chairs in the LR so what exactly is modern in the space other than the white walls. IMO a couple of pillows in colors from the rug and a new coffee table hopefully modern if that is your aim

Hi, @Patricia Colwell Consulting. Thank you for your thoughts. This room is very much a work in progress as we have just moved in (ie dining chairs as temporary seating). Only piece of furniture that stays is the couch (and rug!). The rest of the house is more contemporary vintage (modern leaning).
