Bathroom Sink is too small for countertop! Can we fix this problem?!?

We just had our bathroom countertop installed with an undermount sink. It looks terrible! It is completly our fault- originally we were having an 18 inch vanity built, so we ordered a narrow sink. Months later, after a long delayed carpenter failure, we hired a new carpenter who designed a larger vanity using alternate depths. Monday the countertop installer came, I showed him the faucet and showed him where the undermount sink box was. It was cut and placed before I realized how small it looks and how far away it is from the wall!!
What can I do?!?! Can we install a larger drop in and enlarge the marble? Is a much larger undermount possible? We’ve been without bathrooms since the freeze in February, I feel sick thinking I rushed something carelessly- just wanted to be back in our home for Christmas!

Comments (20)Thanks everyone for the ideas! I'm still a newbie to the forums so I didn't know how to find my posts. We've thought about going down to the 24" or 26" vanity, but I think we need more space. The more we look at it, the more we are thinking we need to just go with a templated granite and have it custom made to fit the space. The idea of the side splash sounds great BUT I think because the space is in the back side of the vanity, either the side splash will wind up being too short in the front side of the vanity or the back splash will be too short on the right side of the vanity. Unfortunately we can't "scootch" the vanity over to the right any more as it is already crowding the toilet a bit. I think it comes down to two options: - a smaller vanity, 24" or 26" - a templated granite On a side note, we are going to put the bathroom on the back burner for now and concentrate on the only major renovation our house needs: the split foyer basement/lower level. Comments (10)You can always pull your cabinets forward the extra distance and put block spacers behind them for support. You may have to do a bit of cut out in the back of the sink cabinet. My kitchen counters are mounted this way so I can have extra deep counter top; instead of the standard 25 inch deep counters I have 33 inch deep. There is a cleat on the back wall to support the back edge of the counter, and spacers between the cleat and cabinet backs and spacers between the back wall and cabinet bases so they can be screwed to the spacers like they would be screwed to the wall normally. Comments (21)While talking solid surface, don't forget Swanstone. We are likely getting their roll-in shower pan and walls. Some of their newest colors are not the speckled look, but more swirly. Don't know for sure about the curling iron for that, though. Couldn't you put a granite or other stone or porcelain or metal trivet down to set it on? I saw a kitchen reno on DIY network recently that used an epoxy resin laboratory benchtop material for the kitchen. I have that in my garage as my workshop countertops because I bought metal lab cabinets off Craigslist. This stuff is heat, acid, VOC and pretty much all-substance proof. It now comes in colors. If you want to see some of the original black stuff, go to the Smaller Homes forum here and search for Mama Goose's Kitchen. She has it next to the fridge, if I remember correctly. Comments (11)are you replacing the tub tile at all? or just the scroll piece? another idea is to take the same quartz countertop and have the top portion of your tub surround done in the same. that way both vanities and top of tub all match. doing a solid color would work better here since you'll want to coordinate w/the tile floor. If you did that, take the tile off the wall above the tub and you could do something like this If keeping that tile on the top of tub, then it might be an issue. you may just want to keep the scroll piece under the window. that's up to you. all depends how far you want to go. if you remove the scroll, you could do a little wood shelf across, below the window, for plants or orchids. as for the mirrors w/the lights in them, they're all over. just google 'vanity mirrors w/lights', or vanity mirrors w/medicine cab" . they are a bit pricey though. 600 and up for the very nice ones. Robern medicine cabinets are a well known name. if you want a taller medicine cab on the side, you will have to have the recessed portion of the wall made taller. as for the tiling portion, yes, just the front wall,,,you would paint on the side portion. I really like this look for your room. you don't have to do MOP tile, it was just a suggestion. there are tons of beautiful tiles you could use. If you did more of an ivory or subtle countertop that plays well w/your tile floor, then you could have more options to play w/some tile. The sconces pictured here are also nice, but there are many other types you could use as well. Don't want to bother w/sconces? then ditch your mirror and buy a backlit, or complete edge lit mirror like this one. you could still do your tiling like shown here. These are also very flattering. this countertop is limestone, below, and is more of a neutral, greige color. i would keep your ceiling dark, like you have it,,maybe do the walls a lighter shade...all depends what you pick for the vanity and tile. Having the mirror cut down isn't expensive. hopefully they can get it off the wall w/o breaking it. doing the tile around the mirror defines that area and gives it so much more appeal....See MoreChris_Anna Bass

2 years agoI think you are panicing unnecessarily. I went and measured the space behind my bathroom sinks. This bathroom has 5-1/2”
And this one has 6-1/4”
My vanities are 21” deep. No one has ever said that a have too much space behind my sinks.
It will look fine once your faucet is installed.
