It will take up the whole room so you need to decide a lot of things starting with the visual size of the bed and IMO one raised up with drawers under it will look huge . The pics I see of the space you are already blocking a door / Post a to scale floor plan I am not sure how a bigger bed will help hubbys back but that needs to be addresses IMO with a better mattress not a bigger bed.

Does your current bed have a footboard? Tape out the new bed dimensions on your floor with painters's tape and see if you have good walking around room. The only difference between a king and queen mattress is the width (76 inches vs 60 inches). I agree that looking for a good quality mattress if there are back issues is a good idea. After 15 years, it's not inconceivable that the mattress needs replacing.

It can be done, but it will be tight. A friend of mine did this in the city, she used floating end tables, which gives you the allusion of more floor space.

Do you have a large enough closet to have an organizer put in? That made all the difference in making this work. Less furniture in the room.

Honestly, we all have too much stuff. If you haven't worn it in a year, most likely you will never wear it. Another option, do you have use of a closet in another room? If so you can make it work, but realize sleeping is all you can do in there. Even dressing will be a challenge.

So I agree, maybe only the mattress needs to be changed, unless he is a very big man and needs space. What's important is a good nights sleep! So if you need to go King size, try to make it work.

Once you tape, approximate the bed with boxes to really get a feel for the height and bulk. If you find you can fit in a king, consider a split king. We got the adjustable bases (which would not work with your drawer bed but do work with other headboard/footboard options). Might offer some adjustment options for his back as well as minimize the disturbance from one of the other of you tossing and turning. Split king sheets are stupid expensive but you can buy Twin XL fitted, and matching King Flat/Pillowcases.

Will you be using the drawers regularly or just for linens? With only 30" of space you will have to open them from the side so check to see if they are on rollers or not. Pictures of your space might help with storage options...

I just renovated a new house with a master that is 12x14. I wanted SO much to keep my king bed and headboard, but when I measured it, I went back to a queen for this house. It was absolutely the best decision since the queen fills up enough of the room (I used a full until the queen was ready), plus with a king I would have had to shimmy into the master bath each time! The position of doors and, to a lesser extent, windows, and any furniture you want also has an impact. I was dealing with 3 doors and 2 dressers that I needed in the room since I didn't have space for them anywhere else and won't get rid of them. You can fit a king, but probably not a typically-sized dresser. Measure it out and see if you can live with it. Or, maybe get a better mattress for your husband and/or an upholstered ottoman at the foot of the bed for the cats?

We crammed a king into an 11x11 bedroom for 12 years. Super cramped -- the room was ALL bed -- but there's no way either of us was going smaller. Sleep quality definitely trumped looks. Having said that... I think we're heading towards functionthenlook's solution -- or maybe 2 twins, Ricky and Lucy stye, now that we're in a house with a reasonable size bedroom.

My husband and I have had a queen bed for 15 years, we're just finding it small with the two cats and his back bothers him.

Just askin' ... if his back bothers him, do you need a new mattress more than you need a larger bed? We slept on an old king-sized bed that a relative gave us for YEARS, and it "grew old" so slowly that we really hadn't realized just how bad it had become ... but we noted that when we went to a hotel, we slept SO MUCH BETTER. We got a fantastic mattress for each other for Christmas one year, and it's the best money we ever spent. I still lie down every night and think, "Ahhhhh."

I've been eyeing this particular King bed.

Years ago I had a bed with drawers underneath. It was an okay bed ... but consider:

- With such narrow room, opening these drawers will be difficult. You may not be able to pull them out all the way.

- My drawers went "all the way to the headboard", so I had to move the nightstand to open the first drawers ... as a result, I stored Christmas decorations in them. Not ideal.

This room is lovely, but let's analyze what's making it work:

- The two large windows and light walls give the feeling of a larger space. Seriously, those windows MAKE the room; the same space with windows on only one wall would feel much smaller /closed in.

- The wall-mounted lamps are necessary ... otherwise you'd have no nightstand space at all. You could do this style lamp, or you could have hanging pendants.

- Those nightstands are seriously tiny. What do you have on your nightstands now? I bet you have an alarm clock, a phone charger, a book or two, a tube of lotion, maybe some jewelry in a bitty tray ... this picture contains none of those things; it's staged nicely, but consider what you'd really keep on the nightstand.

- Note that this bed has no footboard. Though I love footboards, they don't work well in a small bedroom.

So true. Consider everything you'd need to store: not just clothes, but bed linens, etc.

Just a note: King bed linens are more expensive than smaller beds ... I mean, the difference is larger than can really be justified by that bit more of fabric. This isn't a huge issue because you probably don't buy new linens all that often ... but be prepared for a bit of sticker shock.

Last thoughts:

- In our old house we had a king in a 13' wide bedroom ... it was about the smallest you could have and really say, "A king fits nicely here". Yes, you could squeeze a king in ... but are you okay with squeezing through a pretty small walkway on each side?

- I'm a big fan of "try before you buy". Have you stayed in a king-sized bed in a hotel lately? I suggest you go somewhere for the weekend and see if a king-bed really solves the problems you've described.

- I used to appreciate the king when our kids were small and still crawled into bed with us, but I'd gladly go back to a queen now. It's plenty big for my husband and I.

- King-sized beds are more trouble to make up ... you can't reach across them easily.

We have the split king adjustable as I have a back/hip issue and it makes a huge difference. Sleep quality trumps looks. See if you can take everything else out except for small nightstands...

Consider using two twin-sized beds. Although this makes the same width as a king, it is five inches shorter and easier to put sheets on. Hubby and I appreciate having our separate covers, but also sleeping close to one another.

I calculate that your room is 138 inches in both directions, a king or two singles would be 76 inches, leaving you 62 inches for spacing around the king or around and between the twins. For the king the extra room length would be 58 inches, for the twins it would be 63 inches. Certainly, either choice of beds would fit, but you would have to be careful about what else you need in the room as well as how the windows and doors are arranged.

Why not consider a Calif King? they are longer than a regular King, and not as wide. so you'll get a few inches on the width

If you're accustomed to a queen, the calif king and the extra 4 inches or so should be fine. My husband and I aren't small people and it's ample room for us. if you're tall, the extra length is nice (or if you have pets that sleep w/you.)

For the type of bed, go w/something low profile. you don't want an oversized headboard. I think the one you've pictured might be ok. The comment about floating nightstands is also a good idea. just something simple.

This bed is similar to the one you've shown. the nightstands are prob 30" or so. (this might be a queen. hard to tell)

This width is prob in the 11-12' range.

Both are low profile, and don't take up room 'visually'.

I don't know if this picture will help you visualize, but this is our platform bed that we made from bamboo. It's a Calif King, and the width of the bed itself is 75".

we also made the floating nightstands. (30"X18")

wall to wall this space is about 13 feet. a little bit wider than your room.

take advantage of wall space and try shelving (if you're not in earthquake country you could do this):

This is a smaller room. prob 10-11 feet wide. you could do your bed and nightstands right up against the walls.

We found, with back issues, very firm mattresses were best. We buy a new mattress maybe every ten years or so. Although the cost always seems high, the commercial is right- you spend one third of your life on it! One third of every day! One third of every week! Mattresses don’t last forever. A bad mattress can ruin your day, cause medical bills, make you grumpy! We have a dear friend who begs us to stay with her when we’re in town, but we can’t sleep at night or walk without pain the next day. We have stopped staying with her.

If you decide on a King, I would definitely go with Beth's suggestion for a Cal King.
